Rays Fall to 1-6-1 as Sonnanstine Struggles and Bats Fall Silent

The Rays Andy Sonnanstine struggled in his second straight bad outing. Sonnanstine went 2 innings, surrendering 2 runs in each. Though his recent results have not been great, Sonnanstine projects to be, at most, the Rays long man and spot starter in 2011.

The game did feature some strong, one-inning performances from projected late relievers Kyle Farnsworth and Joel Peralta. Both pitchers collected 2 strikeouts, while only allow 1 hit — Farnsworth also allowing a walk.

Adam Russell, another competitor for some late-inning work, gave up 2 hits, 2 walks, and 1 run despite striking out the side in the 6th.

Meanwhile, the Rays offense appeared rather punchless, scoring only once on a John Jaso sacrifice fly, also in the sixth inning. Altogether, the Rays collected only 3 hits and 1 walk, with the only extra base hit coming from Sean Rodriguez’s double.

Rays fans concerned about the team’s Spring Training record need not worry. Despite the poor record, the Rays most key contributors — players such as David Price, James Shields, Manny Ramirez, and Evan Longoria — have been having rather fine springs. Manny, Longoria, and even Sean Rodriguez have all hit quite well — to the tune of on-base-plus-slugging rates over .900.

The Rays will be in Spring Training action again tomorrow at 1:05 pm EST as they face of against the Philadelphia Phillies split-squad team.
