The All-Star Game selections were just announced on TBS, and it appears the Rays have three all-stars this season: David Price, James Shields, and Matt Joyce. Price and Shields were both voted in by the fans, while Matt Joyce was voted in by the players.
All three of these guys are great selections and deserve to be in the all-star game. Shields (2.05 ERA, 3.07 FIP) and Price (3.43 ERA, 2.68 FIP) have both been exceptional this season, leading the Rays' staff in innings pitched, FIP, and WAR. And Matt Joyce has been one of the Rays' most valuable position players, racking up a .302/.362/.528 slashline and .380 wOBA despite a recent slump.
The only Ray that seemingly deserves a slot that didn't get selected is Ben Zobrist. Zobrist has returned to his Zorilla form this year, cranking out 40 extra base hits already this season -- eight more than Matt Joyce and 15 more than Evan Longoria. He's also gotten on base at a high clip and played exceptional defense, making him arguably one of the most valuable players in the majors. His skill set is always going to be underrated, though, so it's no surprise he didn't get much attention.
