2012 Big East Baseball Tournament: South Florida Loses In Opening Round

The opening round of the 2012 Big East baseball tournament has come to a close with a slate of decisive wins.

No. 3 Seton Hall Vs. No. 6 Rutgers, Seton Hall wins 6-1: The Seton Hall Pirates opened up their Big East tournament with a 6-1 victory over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights on Wednesday. The Pirates got a three-run third inning, sparked by a two-run RBI Double by left fielder Scott Kalamar. Seton Hall went on to score three more runs, allowing Rutgers to score just a single run.

No. 2 St. John's Vs. No. 7 Notre Dame, St. Johns pounds the Irish 12-2: St. John's took on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the first-round of the Big East tournament, pounding the Irish to the tune of 12 runs and ending the game in just seven innings. Dannny Bethea drove in three runs for the Red Storm and was one of eight St. John's batters with at least two hits.

No. 1 Louisville Vs. No. 8 Pittsburgh, Louisville wins 8-4: Louisville rallied late against PItt, scoring four runs in the bottom of the eight inning putting the game out of reach. Pitt scored another run in the ninth inning, but just couldn't get enough runs to cross the player, going down in the first round 8-4.

No. 4 Southern Florida Vs. No. 5 Connecticut, Huskies drop Bulls 7-2: South Florida is looking to win their first Big East baseball tournament, but aren't off to a good start after losing in the opening round to the Connecticut Huskies 7-2 on Wednesday evening. Two multi-run innings late in the game sealed the loss for the Bulls.
