The Golden Panthers have been a part of the Sun Belt Conference since 1998. In that time they became the fastest football team in NCAA history to transition from an football championship subdivision team, incepted in 2002, to a football bowl subdivision school three years later.
The Golden Panthers join the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs, Old Dominion Monarchs, Charlotte 49ers, University of North Texas Mean Green and Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners as teams that will join Conference USA in 2013. This is to make up the departure of the Central Florida Knights, Memphis Tigers, Houston Cougars and the SMU Mustangs.
