19 year-old Sloane Stephens from Fort Lauderdale, Fla. won her third round match at Roland Garros on Friday, advancing her to a fourth round matchup against Mathilde Johansonn of France 6-3, 6-2. The victory sets up a match against No. 6 ranked Samantha Stosur of Austraila who defeated No. 27 Nadia Petrova of Russia, 6-3, 6-3.
No. 2 ranked Maria Sharapova won her second round match, delayed from yesterday, over Ayumi Morita of Japan, 6-1, 6-1. The biggest upset of the day came against No. 3 ranked Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland lost to No. 26 Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. Other women's winners include No. 15 Dominika Cibulkova, No. 21 Sara Errani and Petra Martic.
The men's side of the tournament had a lot of action with four matches going the full five sets. The most demanding match was a five set thriller between No. 18 Stanislas Wawrinka and No. 11 Gilles Simon. Wawrinka won a match that included two tiebreakers, 7-5, 6-7 (5-7),6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 6-2. The three other five-set matches were won by No. 7 Tomas Berdych, No. 20 Marcel Granollers and No. 22 Andreas Seppi.
No. 3 ranked Roger Federer trailed in the fourth set, but came back to win against Nicolas Mahut of France, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.
Other men's winners include No. 5 Jo-Wilfried Simon, No. 9 Juan Martin del Portro and David Goffin.
No. 1 ranked Novak Djokovic currently has won two sets and leads in the final set over his opponent, Nicolas Devilder of France.
