College World Series 2012: Opening Ceremonies For CWS Canceled Due To Severe Weather In Omaha

The College World Series Opening Ceremonies were canceled on Thursday night because of inclement weather in the Omaha area. Severe weather, with winds up to 60 to 70 mph, was expected but organizers also planned to go ahead with the ceremonies. That changed shortly after 7 p.m. ET when they officially announced the cancellation. South Carolina was on the field practicing when officials cleared them off and asked fans to leave the stands. A tarp covered home plate and the pitcher's mound, bracing for potential heavy rain.

The organizers of the CWS announced that private smaller ceremony would be held for just the teams later on Thursday. The Florida State Seminoles will begin play on Friday night, with first pitch expected around 9 p.m. ET. The Gators will play at the same time on Saturday.
