French Open Results 2012: Maria Sharapova, Petra Kvitova Win Quarterfinal Matches On Wednesday

Women's singles quarterfinal final play began on Wednesday in the 2012 French Open with a pair of matches. The day featured more great play, but no surprises as both favorites won.

Second-seeded Maria Sharapova needed only two sets to beat Kaia Kanepi by a final of 6-2, 6-3. In the other match, Petra Kvitova, the fourth seed, got around unranked challenger Yaroslava Shvedova after three sets. Shvedova won the first set, but Kvitova stormed back with wins in the next two for a final score of 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Men's singles play continues on Wednesday, following dramatic comebacks from both Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer on Tuesday. No. 2 Rafael Nadal takes on No. 12 Nicolas Almagro. Andy Murray, the fourth seed, plays sixth-seeded David Ferrer in the other men's match on Wednesday at Roland Garros.
