Rob Murphy Declines Position With Orlando Magic

Eastern Michigan head coach Rob Murphy admitted on Thursday the Orlando Magic were interested in hiring him in some sort of capacity, but it's clear that Murphy plans on honoring his contract with EMU.

As the Detroit Free Press reported, Murphy would have to pay the equivalent to one year's salary to break his contract with EMU and would need it to be paid in a lump sum or in monthly payments over the remaining term of the five-year contract, which is four more years. So that'd be $210,000 over a four-year span.

Murphy is going to pass on the Magic, who recently hired Jacque Vaughn as head coach.

"I would like to end the speculation about my leaving Eastern Michigan University," Murphy said in his statement. "I am pleased to confirm that I am remaining at EMU.

"It is true that I had an opportunity to join the Orlando Magic. Representatives of the Magic were both professional in their approach and respectful of our situation at EMU. I am very appreciative of the opportunity to have spoken with them and would like to publicly thank them for their professionalism and interest."
