First-year Dolphins offensive coordinator Mike Sherman said the position battle at wide receiver is going to go "down to the wire." Sherman also told the Palm Beach Post that special teams coach Darren Rizzi will have a lot of influence over the decisions.
The Dolphins are all about the position battles this season, as the starting quarterback position is up for grabs as well.
But there is a reason why the Dolphins aren't running the ball much this preseason. It's because the uncertainty is in the passing game, and if they are going to implement Sherman's West Coast scheme, it can't be this way. Aside from wanting to prevent injuries to the running backs they may come to rely on heavily this season, the Dolphins need a true evaluation of everyone from Davone Bess to Jeff Fuller.
What's also interesting about this is it speaks to how expendable Chad Johnson was. If the wide receiver battle is as wide open as it is, and a guy with his creds couldn't stand out, it really says a lot about Johnson as a ball player.
