First round action is still underway at the U.S. Open at Flushing, N.Y. On the men's side of the tournament, No. 4 David Ferrer defeated Kevin Anderson in straight sets. No. 29 Viktor Troicki was upset by Cedrik-Marcel Stebe. Grega Zemlja and Igor Sijsling also won first round matches.
No. 8 Janko Tipsarevic lost his first two sets against Guillaume Rufin, but came back to win the next two and is currently leading in the fifth and final set. No. 28 Mikhail Youzhny won his first two sets, but then lost the next two sets and is tied with Gilles Muller in the fifth set.
On the women's side of the tournament, No. 1 Victoria Azarenka, No. 15 Lucie Safarova, No. 19 Nadia Petrova, No. 28 Jie Zheng and No. 31 Varvara Lepchenko all won their matches. No. 7 Samantha Stosur, No. 9 Na Li and No. 11 Marion Bartoli are all set to have matches later Wednesday.
