The Tennessee Volunteers will retire the No. 45 jersey of former player and coach Johnny Majors before their Saturday home game against the Florida Gators, reports Evan Woodbery of Go Vols Extra.
In three seasons with the Vols from 1954-'56, Majors, now 77, was twice named SEC Player of the Year as a tailback. He finished second in the Heisman Trophy balloting in 1956, the same year he was a unanimous All-American. He also won 116 games while coaching Tennessee from 1977-'92.
"It is only fitting to honor such a distinguished playing career," said Tennessee Athletics Director Dave Hart in a university release. "Johnny Majors is one of the greatest players in the rich and storied tradition of Tennessee football, and we are proud to bestow this honor upon him."
The ceremony is scheduled for 5:40 p.m. ET, 20 minutes before the scheduled kickoff. The game will be televised by ESPN.
