The Tampa Bay Rays trail the Baltimore Orioles by 5.5 games for the second wild card spot in the American League. With only 12 games left in the season, the Rays open up a three-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays.
After a 7-4 walk-off victory against the Boston Red Sox, James Shields (14-9, 3.77 ERA) will start for the Rays. In his last start, he recorded a loss after pitching six and one-thirds innings against the New York Yankees, allowing four earned runs.
For the Blue Jays, Carlos Villanueva (7-5, 3.42) will start. In his last start, he pitched seven innings and allowed two earned runs in a no-decision against the Red Sox.
