The 2012 U.S. Open handed out its first championship on Thursday at Arthur Ashe Stadium as Ekaterina Makarova and Bruno Soares defeated Marcin Matkowski and Kveta Peschkee in the mixed doubles final. The match went the distance, with Makarova and Soares winning 12-10 in a super tiebreak.
Matkowski and Peschkee took the first set after a long 10-8 tiebreak battle. Makarova and Soares bounced back in the second set decisively, taking it 6-1 to force the super tiebreak on their way to taking the title.
David Ferrer and Janko Tipsarevic are currently playing in a men's quarterfinal match. Tipsarevic earned an early break, but Ferrer broke back to even the first set at 2-2. The winner between Ferrer and Tipsarevic will earn their a trip the semifinals against the winner of Novak Djokovic and Juan Martin Del Potro.
