The Florida International University Panthers host the Akron Zips on Saturday, with both teams looking for their first win of the 2012 season. Florida International opened their season with a 46-26 loss to Duke, while Akron went down 56-14 to the UCF Knights.
The Panthers managed more than 500 yards of offense in their loss to Duke, but struggled to turn that offense into points. Sophomore quarterback Jake Medlock was 27-for-45 for 348 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Junior running back Kendrick Rhodes and senior wide receiver Wayne Times led the receiving corps, with Rhodes picking up 115 yards on 10 catches and Times 114 on nine. Rhodes also had 130 yards on 25 carries.
If FIU wants to stay competitive with the Zips, they'll need to eliminate mistakes like the two turnovers they gave up against Duke, one on a rush by junior Glenn Coleman and the other on a reception by senior Jacob Younger.
Game time, TV channel: 6 p.m. ET, ESPN3
Point spread: Akron favored by 23.5
