The two teams traded scores throughout the first half, with the Gamecocks leading 21-13 in the first half. Michigan scored nine points in the third quarter while shutting out South Carolina to take a 22-21 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Connor Shaw threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Ace Sanders with 8:06 left in the fourth quarter to regain the lead, but the Wolverines went on a eight-play, 51-yard drive capped with a 17-yard Devin Gardner touchdown pass to Jeremy Gallon to put the Wolverines up 28-27 with 3:29 left.
Shaw and Dylan Thompson marched the Gamecocks down the field, with Thompson throwing the game-winning pass to Bruce Ellington with only 11 seconds left in the game. Gardner's desperate Hail Mary fell short, icing the game for South Carolina.
Shaw compiled 320 total yards, throwing for two touchdowns while not turning the ball over. Thompson completed seven of his nine passes on the day for 117 yards and two touchdowns.
Gardner completed 18 of his 35 passes, throwing for 214 yards and three touchdowns. Denard Robinson took snaps out of the backfield, rushing for 100 yards on 23 carries.
