The Tampa Bay Buccaneers absolutely need help in their secondary. They've been active in trade talks for New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis, but if they are unable to make a deal, there will be some serious issues next season. When it comes to cornerbacks, the team does hold an advantageous position in the 2013 NFL Draft, however.
Tampa Bay is picking at No. 13 in the first round of the draft, which could be a prime spot to land one of the top two or three cornerbacks in the nation if they elect to go that route. Some guys may not fit the "best available player" criteria, but the Buccaneers will be totally sunk if they can't land a serviceable starter at some point.
Matthew Fairburn and Dan Kadar collaborated on the latest SB Nation mock draft on Monday, and they have the Buccaneers addressing the need by taking Desmond Trufant, the cornerback out of Washington:
Whether it's a player like Trufant or someone like Xavier Rhodes, if available, cornerback has to be the top first-round priority for the Buccaneers. Chances are this pick could get flipped for Darrelle Revis. If it is and the Jets are picking here, cornerback may be the 13th pick in the draft regardless.
The Bucs will hope to land a guy like Trufan, Dee Milliner or Xavier Rhodes at this point if the draft. In SB Nation's mock there are still some strong players available that could help Tampa Bay, like defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson, but Trufant wouldn't be a reach at pick No. 13 and definitely fills the need.
