The South Carolina Gamecocks will be without one of their best defensive players this weekend after sophomore defensive tackle Kelcy Quarles was suspended by the team for this Saturday's game against the Florida Gators.
According to Darryl Slater of The Post and Courier, Quarles will miss this week's game after he was caught throwing a punch at LSU offensive lineman P.J. Lonergan in the first quarter last week. The Gamecocks would ultimately fall to LSU, 23-21 .
Quarles has been a major presence on the South Carolina interior this season, totaling 30 tackles, 6 for a loss, and 2.5 sacks for the Gamecocks this season.
Even if Quarles was not suspended, he would have been a major doubt to play this weekend. Quarles was unable to practice this week after suffering a sprained shoulder against LSU last Saturday.
The Gamecocks will now turn to fellow sophomore J.T. Surratt to start in Quarles' place against the Gators this weekend. Surratt has recorded seven tackles and two for a loss in limited action for South Carolina this season.
