Florida expected big things from junior CB Cody Riggs this season, but with a bone fracture in his right foot lingering, they may end up shutting him down and applying for a medical red-shirt.
Riggs suffered the injury in the second game of the season, a 20-17 victory over Texas A&M. But while it did not require surgery, it has kept him out of the line-up since.
As a result, defensive coordinator Dan Quinn told reporters that the coaching staff would start looking at their options to salvage Riggs' season (courtesy of the Gainesville Sun):
"I'm not sure on the compliance of that, but I think that it would be (possible) due to the nature of the injury so early," Quinn said. "So it's something that certainly we'd consider moving forward. At this time, we're just trying to push to get everybody back available."
As a sophomore, Riggs had 31 tackles and 2 pass deflections while starting 10 games. In limited action in 2012, the 5'10 190 CB had 7 tackles and 2 pass deflections.
If his current timetable holds, he would be available to play in their Nov. 24 showdown with Florida State, but he, as well and the coaching staff, will have to decide whether that game would be worth burning an entire year of his eligibility.
