Charlie Weis Contract: Kansas To Pay Former Gators Offensive Coordinator $12.5 Million

Charlie Weis accepted the Kansas Jayhawks' head coaching job, leaving the Florida Gators in need of a new offensive coordinator. And while that search is ongoing, details about Weis' contract with Kansas have emerged.

According to Matt Tait of the school's official website, Weis' contract guarantees him $12.5 million over five seasons, with opportunities to earn incentives along the way. Weis will earn that $12.5 million "whether he coaches one game, one year or all five seasons," Tait says.

For instance, Weis earn $50,000 for winning five Big 12 conference games, and an additional $10,000 for each subsequent Big 12 win. A bowl game invitation is worth $50,000, while a bowl victory adds another $25,000 to Weis' pay day. If he guides the Jayhawks to a national championship appearance, he'll earn an additional $200,000. A BCS championship victory is worth another $100,000. Given the potential windfall on top of the guaranteed eight-figure salary, it's easy to see why Weis preferred taking over Kansas' program to handling Florida's offense.

Weis' career head-coaching record--all with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish--stands at 35-27, with a 1-2 record in bowl games. Weis served as the Gators' offensive coordinator for just one season.
