Lady 'Canes Ranked No. 5 In AP Poll, Highest Ever Ranking For Team

Without peaking, can you name the top college basketball team in the state of Florida? It's true that the No. 12 Florida Gators and No. 15 Florida State Seminoles are both dominant teams, and that the USF Bulls are making a surprisingly strong showing this season and pushing themselves into contention for an NCAA bid. All three of these teams should get plenty of praise for their season thus far...but they all still fall short of the title of best team in the state.

So who is it? The Miami Hurricanes' women's basketball team, who are currently ranked the No. 5 women's team in the nation. The Lady 'Canes had been ranked No. 6 last week, and they climbed over Duke after the Blue Devils' loss to No. 7 Maryland. This No. 5 ranking is the highest ever achieved by the Miami Hurricanes' women's basketball program, tying a mark set back in 1992.

But it's not all smooth sailing from here. If the Hurricanes want to keep their high ranking, they will need to beat No. 7 Duke this upcoming Friday. Duke is currently tied with the Hurricanes for first-place in the ACC, so a win over the Blue Devils would cement the Hurricanes' elite status.

Women's basketball may not get much love or attention until the NCAA tournament, but this is one team you shouldn't ignore. Their game against Duke this Friday promises to be a great game, so hopefully the U's campus turns out to support the best team in the state.
