Florida Panthers defenseman Erik Gudbranson underwent shoulder surgery last week, after suffering a shoulder injury during an informal workout.

Gudbranson was Florida's first-round draft choice in 2010, and was the No. 3 overall selection in the draft. Despite playing well in the playoffs, Gudbranson's 2011-12 season wasn't much to write home about, as the talented defenseman registered just two goals and six assists in 72 games, and a +/- of -19.

The severity of the injury is unknown, as the Panthers did not release any details.

Florida's season opener is scheduled for Oct. 13, but with the current collective bargaining agreement set to expire Saturday, it looks increasingly unlikely that the 2012-13 season will start on time. For most hockey players and fans, that will come as a disappointment, but at the very least, it will give Gudbranson extra time to heal and get ready for the season.
