Florida State Holds on for First ACC Win; Defeats Virginia Tech in Blacksburg 63-59

Florida State’s men’s basketball team proved they could go on the road and win in convincing fashion, as they beat Virginia Tech tonight 63-59 in Blacksburg, Virginia.

The FSU squad showed what they do best, block shots, play great defense, and turn the ball over to the other team. Fortunately for the Seminoles, their offense was able to do just well enough to come out of this game on top. Florida State never trailed in the contest.

Virginia Tech made it close in the second half, bringing it within 3 on turnovers and missed shots by FSU. Starting with about 7 minutes to go in the game, the Hokies were never further than 7 points ahead for the rest of the game. It almost came down to a free throw shooting contest and Florida State was lucky it never made it that far, as Virginia Tech’s shooters were 21-24 from the line and Florida State was only 17-22.

Florida State was led with a strong performance by Bernard James and Ian Miller. James had a double-double on the night with 18 points and 15 rebounds. Ian Miller contributed with 15 points.

The high scorer for Virginia Tech was Erick Green with 21 points. He was 5/14 from the field but was perfect from the free throw line, making 10. Also contributing was Dorian Finney-Smith with 9 points and 10 rebounds.

The next step for the Noles is to show they can put together back to back solid games. The #3 North Carolina Tarheels will be coming to the Donald Tucker Civic Center for what is most likely to be the biggest basketball game of the year in Tallahassee, on Saturday. It’s a 2:00pm tipoff.
