Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Mike Mularkey admitted to not giving cornerback Rashean Mathis enough playing time during the team's 34-18 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday:
"He’ll play more. Before him even talking to you guys, which I did not know he talked to you, I just spoke with him about 30 minutes ago, and I just called him in and said I should have had him in there earlier yesterday that that’s nobody’s fault but mine. I wish I had him in there earlier. It wasn’t like they were throwing the ball 40 times, but I should have had him in there in the game and addressed it with him before knowing he was going to talk to you."
Mathis missed three games earlier this year due to a groin injury, but was healthy to suit up on Sunday. Kevin Rutland received playing time ahead of him, and was victimized several times by the Bills offense, including on a touchdown pass to Stevie Johnson. Mathis only played eight snaps against Buffalo.
Mathis is in his tenth season in the NFL out of Bethune-Cookman, and has spent his entire career playing in Jacksonville. He has compiled over 500 tackles and 30 interceptions during his career, but has yet to pull in a pick this year. His recent injury history and lack of product, combined with the fact that he will be a free agent at the end of the season, make a departure from the Jaguars seem likely at the end of the season.
