Does Justin Blackmon Have A Bigger Issue?

Jacksonville Jaguars first-round pick Justin Blackmon picked up his second DUI in as many years on Sunday morning at roughly 3 a.m. ET. Police in Payne County pulled Blackmon over for driving 60 M.P.H. in a 35 M.P.H. zone and then booked for an aggravated DUI when he blew a .24 on a breathalyzer test. With the arrest, his second in 20 months, Blackmon could be facing jail time, league discipline and a possible suspension for his off the field transgressions.

There's a deeper issue of concern in this situation, however.

I'm 29 years old. I like to drink beer, I drink beer quite a bit. I've driven home a few times, more than I should have, when I probably shouldn't have. I've driven home after 2-3 beers. I have a few friends who've gotten a DUI, but I can't think of anyone I personally know at any age who's gotten two DUI's in less than two years like Justin Blackmon has. While I'm upset that he was caught driving drunk, I realize it's a bit hypocritical of me to be so given my own personal mistakes. I'm fine with being a hypocrite in that regard however, because I have some concerns for Blackmon that extend to more than missing games due to a suspension.

The Jaguars have dealt with guys like Reggie Williams, Matt Jones, and Jimmy Smith who had drug issues off the field. They've also had to deal with R.J. Soward who had his own alcohol related issues, even needing the team to send a car to pick him up so they knew he would make it to the building for practice. Soward was an alcoholic and had an issue with alcohol.

This is what concerns me with Justin Blackmon. Is he an alcoholic? Does he need help?

This question is so much more important to me than how many games he's going to be suspended. Getting two DUI's in a 20 month period means there is probably a problem. Not to mention the various rumors of Blackmon around town in Jacksonville at local establishments I won't get into, but I only mention as another reason for concern. Blackmon could have a serious issue that he could need to get help for.

Blackmon blew a .24 on his breathalyzer test, which is three times the legal limit in most states of .08. That means that Blackmon was drinking heavily and according to the BAC card at Be Responsible About Drinking's site, brad21.org, at Blackmon's weight he'd need to have consumed at least 10 12 oz beers in an hour.

That's some pretty serious drinking and it's clearly not just a one time thing. The Jaguars will need to determine if this is just a young guy making mistakes or if this is a deeper, more serious issue.
