Jaguars LB Daryl Smith Ruled Out Vs. Vikings

Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Daryl Smith will not play Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings. Linebacker Kyle Bosworth will start in his place.

Smith suffered a groin injury early during training camp and did not play during any preseason games, but he was not ruled out for Week 1 until Friday.

Over at Big Cat Country, Alfie Crow sums up the development as such:

Smith is a big loss for the Jaguars defense, as he's their best cover linebacker and a three-down player. I would expect the Vikings offense to target the Jaguars linebackers on Sunday, as they're down to just one starter in Paul Posluszny.

The other starter missing is Clint Session, who is dealing with continued problems from a series of concussions suffered in 2011 and may be sent to the injured reserve.

Smith is entering his ninth season in the NFL, and he's played all nine with the Jaguars. He was a second-round draft choice in 2004 out of Georgia Tech, and he's the Jaguars' all-time tackles leader with 743 in his career.

The Jaguars open on the road against the Vikings. The game kicks off Sunday at 1 p.m. ET on CBS.
