In a battle of first-round quarterbacks, Andrew Luck got the better of Ryan Tannehill in the first stanza in Indianapolis, connecting with Reggie Wayne for a nine-yard touchdown strike that gave the Colts a 7-3 lead.
The Stanford product got off to a hot start, completing all four of his passes on the first drive on the day to lead the Colts into the heart of Dolphins territory. The drive stalled out after Indy couldn't convert on a third-and-1, and the Colts failed to get on the board when the usually reliable Adam Vinateri missed a 48-yard field goal.
After the miss, Tannehill and the Dolphins countered with a solid drive of their own, culminating in a 37-yard field goal from Dan Carpenter that gave Miami the 3-0 lead.
Luck promptly responded on the next drive, converting two third-and-longs and benefitting from a pass interference call to put the Colts on the doorstep of the end zone before hooking up with Wayne for the score. Luck is 8-for-11 passing for 108 yards and a touchdown, and Tannehill is 5-for-8 for 81 yards.
