Miami Dolphins Coaching Update: New York Jets Hire Tony Sparano

While Miami Dolphins fans wait to learn whom their team will hire as its next head coach, they at least know the man he'll replace has found a new job. As Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports, the AFC East rival New York Jets have hired Tony Sparano as their offensive coordinator just weeks after Miami dismissed him as head coach.

Sparano, who went 29-32 in his two-plus seasons with Miami, replaces Brian Schottenheimer. Shandel Richardson of the South Florida Sun Sentinel notes the strangeness of New York's hiring of Sparano. "Schottenheimer was canned because of the Jets’ offensive struggles," says Richardson. "That’s interesting considering Sparano was under fire for the same thing in Miami. The Dolphins were atrocious at times on offense this season, especially in red-zone situations." The Dolphins scored touchdowns on just 47.14 percent of their possessions inside their opponents' 20-yard-line, the ninth-worst figure in the NFL.
