Ronnie Brown was a running back who starred for the Auburn Tigers in college. He was a two time second-team AP All-SEC selection, in 2002 and 2004. Miami selected him with their first round pick of the 2005 NFL Entry Draft with the second overall pick, after quarterback Alex Smith was selected by the San Francisco 49ers.
As a rookie, Brown started 14 of 15 games for the Dolphins next to Ricky Williams. Brown led the Dolphins that season with 907 rushing yards on 207 carries, scoring four touchdowns. He also caught 32 passes out of the backfield for 232 yards and another touchdown. His best performance came in a week three victory over the Carolina Panthers, 27-24, gaining 132 yards and scoring a touchdown on 23 carries. Miami finished 9-7, missing the playoffs.
In 2006, Brown picked up the slack for the departed Williams, gaining a career high 1,008 yards on 241 carries, scoring five touchdowns and catching 33 passes for 276 yards. This includes a 31-13 week eight victory over the Chicago Bears, in which Brown gained 157 yards on 29 carries. Miami finished the season 6-10.
Due to a torn ACL, Brown spent over half of the 2007 NFL season on the injured reserve. In the seven games he started prior to injury, he gained 602 yards on 119 carries along with four touchdowns. This includes a four game span where he gained over 100 yards in four consecutive games. He also caught a career high 39 passes for 389 yards and a touchdown. The team finished 1-15, having to start the likes of Jesse Chatman and Samkon Gado in Brown's absence.
Ricky Williams returned to the Miami backfield in 2008 to split the load with Brown. Brown responded with another great season, gaining 916 yards on 214 carries for a career high 10 touchdowns. He also caught 33 passes for 254 yards. As the catalyst for the "Wildcat" formation, he also completed two-of-three passes for 41 yards and a score. Brown was selected to his first career Pro Bowl for his efforts, and the Dolphins finished the season with an impressive 11-5 record, good enough to win the AFC East. Unfortunately, Miami's three seed had them matched up with the Baltimore Ravens, who stung the Dolphins 27-9 in the wildcard round.
In 2009, Brown was limited to nine starts with a foot injury. He still managed to score eight touchdowns on 147 carries, gaining 648 yards for the 7-9 Dolphins. This includes a 27-23 week two loss to the Indianapolis Colts where he gained 136 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries to lead Miami.
2010 would see Brown start all 16 games for Miami, leading the Dolphins by carrying the ball 200 times for 734 yards and five touchdowns. The team again finished 7-9, missing out on the playoffs.
Brown was signed away by the Philadelphia Eagles for the 2011 season, appearing in all 16 games with limited efficiency, gaining only 136 yards.
In six years with the Dolphins, Brown gained a total of 4,815 yards while scoring 36 touchdowns on 1,128 carries, also catching 184 passes for 1,491 yards and two more scores.
