Dolphins OTAs: Miami's New Blocking Scheme Could Help Run Game

With new head coach Joe Philbin taking over the reigns and setting up his offense, it includes a change in blocking styles for the offensive line. Rather than using the power running game that they have used in the past, the Dolphins are switching to a zone blocking scheme which should play to the strengths of running backs like Reggie Bush and Steve Slaton.

The offensive line seems to be happy with this change in schemes, according to a post by Omar Kelly.

Center Mike Pouncey thinks the Dolphins' new zone blocking scheme will benefit the offensive line, and team in general because "we got a lot of athletes that can run," Pouncey said, likely referring to Jake Long, Richie Incognito, Artis Hicks, Lydon Murtha and rookie Jonathan Martin. "The zone scheme is better for us than a power scheme."

The key to a good zone blocking game is speed. If the offensive line of the Dolphins can learn this new blocking scheme, the running game could improve dramatically this season.
