Miami Marlins hire Mike Redmond as manager

Jared Wickerham

The Miami Marlins have hired Mike Redmond to be their next manager, according to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman.

Redmond is a former catcher who spent 13 seasons playing in Major League Baseball, including seven with the Marlins. He retired following the 2010 season and had been managing the Dunedin Blue Jays, which is Toronto's advanced Single-A affiliate.

Under Redmond's leadership, Dunedin finished the 2012 season with a 78-55 record and won the North Division of the Florida State League. Redmond's Dunedin team also finished the 2011 season with a winning record.

The Marlins fired manager Ozzie Guillen on Oct. 23 after just one season at the heml. After an offseason in which the team acquired Jose Reyes, Mark Buehrle and Heath Bell and also attempted to sign Albert Pujols, the Marlins finished just 69-93. That placed them last in the NL East, and only three National League teams ended the season with fewer wins.
