The Miami Marlins tendered an offer to relief pitcher Ryan Webb and claimed infielder Joe Mahoney off of waivers from the Baltimore Orioles on Friday, according to MLB.com's Joe Frisaro.
Webb, 26, pitched a career-high 60 1/3 innings for the Marlins in 2012, posting a 4.03 ERA. Although that was a dropoff from the 3.20 figure he posted in 2011, Webb's walk and strikeout rates improved last season. Webb will be considered for the team's setup role, per Frisaro, with Steve Cishek set to take over closing duties.
Mahoney, 25, made his major league debut with the Orioles last season. He had just four plate appearances in two separate stints with the team. Mahoney failed to reach base in those four plate appearances, but hit .265/.318/.389 at Triple-A Norfolk. Mahoney is a career .274 hitter in the minor leagues, with his best year coming in 2010, when he hit .307/.366/.498 with 18 home runs in High-A and Double-A.
