MLB Draft 2012: Marlins Select Outfielder Austin Dean With Fourth-Round Pick

With the No. 137 overall pick, the Miami Marlins picked up a high school outfielder in Austin Dean from Klein Collins, Texas during the fourth round of Tuesday's MLB Draft. And Dean has some pretty good power. Here's the scouting report:

He may not be Exhibit A in a how-to video on batting stances and approaches, but Dean's ability to punish a baseball is the main reason he's in the Top 100. Dean has quick hands and strength, which leads to above-average raw power. He does it with an unorthodox swing and there are, as a result, some holes, but when he makes contact, it's hard. He goes all-out at all times, which allows him to use his solid average speed well.

In the five picks, since Miami has taken exclusively shortstops (two) and pitchers (three). With its No. 167 and No. 197 overall picks, it picked up senior Austin Nola from LSU and junior Anthony Gomez from Vanderbilt. Both play shortstop.

In the three picks to follow -- No. 227, No. 257 and No. 287 -- they grabbed a trio of pitchers in Shorter University's Ryan Newell, Tennessee's Drew Steckenrider and Purdue's Nicholas Wittgren.
