Magic Coaching Search: Michael Malone Out, Jacque Vaughn May Be The Favorite

Michael Malone and Brian Shaw are out of the running for the Orlando Magic head coaching job. The Orlando Sentinel reported late Sunday night, citing Malone's agent, that Magic general manager Rob Hennigan informed the Golden State assistant coach that he was out of the mix. Jacque Vaughn, an assistant coach with the Spurs, is the current front runner, says the same report.

Hennigan knows Vaughn who played in San Antonio while he worked in the front office there. Vaughn played for the Magic for one season, in 2002-2003. He joined the Spurs as an assistant coach in 2010.

With Malone and Shaw out, that brings it down to four known candidates for the coaching vacancy. Hennigan will narrow that list further before presenting candidates to team CEO Alex Martin for a second interview. After that, one or two finalists will go before the DeVos family for a final approval.
