The fourth quarter went more of the way as the other three quarters, especially for NC State. The Noles offense took it's foot off the gas and began to run clock, but the Wolfpack was still trying to get on the scoreboard. On another promising drive from quarterback Mike Glennon, it was once again squashed by a turnover. Glennon dropped back to pass under heavy duress and had the ball tipped in the air at the line, only to have the ball picked off.

The Noles turned the drive into points, with Dustin Hopkins kicking another field goal to push the Noles lead to 27-0. After another three-and-out by NC State, the Noles decided to add some more points as quarterback E.J. Manuel hit receiver Greg Dent for 37 yards down the sideline then hit Dent again for a 26-yard touchdown to go up 34-0.

The fourth quarter continued more of the same as the Wolfpack struggled to do much of anything offensively, finishing with under 200 yards of total offense. Quarterback Mike Glennon finished with just 19 of 35 for 130 yards and two interceptions. NC State was also held to just 38 rushing yards as the Noles shut out the Wolfpack.

E.J. Manuel had one of his best days of the 2011 season, throwing for 321 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Sophomore Greg Dent led the way receiving with 3 receptions for 70 yards and a touchdown.

The Wolfpack started off the second half with kicking the ball out of bounds, putting the Seminoles at midfield. FSU began marching down the football field, getting in field goal range, but quarterback E.J. Manuel was picked off by Terrell Manning after Rodney Smith failed to secure the football. NC State promptly went three-and-out however, as the Wolfpack haven't been able to move the ball against the FSU defense all game.

The Noles got the football back after Greg Reid nearly fumbled away the punt. The drive almost died right away, but somehow E.J. Manuel got out of a sure sack when the pocket collapsed and scrambled for 21 yards making defenders miss as he picked up the first down on 2nd and 14. The drive still stalled a few plays later and Dustin Hopkins missed a 51-yard field goal kicking into the wind.

During the Noles drive, golfer Jack Nicklaus who's nephew is freshman tight end Nick O'Leary, criticized the Noles offensive game plan a bit for not getting his nephew more involved, citing that the Noles run a lot of four receiver sets and don't use the tight end enough, citing O'Leary's ability to get yards after the catch.

NC State began their best drive of the day, moving down the football field on a few passes and assisted by a defensive penalty. Just as NC State got in scoring range however, Mike Glennon bobbled the shotgun snap and dropped the football as he was being sacked, which was recovered by the Noles defense killing yet another Wolfpack drive.

Florida State took an early 10-0 lead, closing out the first quarter with a 43-yard field goal by kicker Dustin Hopkins. NC State had the ball to open the second quarter and finally got their offense moving. Quarterback Mike Glennon began to get things going in the passing game, including a 17-yard pass to T.J. Graham. The drive was almost thwarted however when Glennon rolled out to his right and was nearly picked off by Lamarcus Joyner. There wasn't a single NC State receiver in the area, but there were four FSU defenders. The interception was reversed after replay review, as Joyner bobbled the football as he went to the ground. Glennon wound up throwing incomplete on third and long as the Wolfpack missed short on a 51-yard field goal try.

The Noles got the football back and their offense continued to move the ball through the air. E.J. Manuel hit wide receiver Bert Reed on back to back passing plays to pick up chunks of yardage and move the chains. Running back Jermaine Thomas got the Noles into the redzone with a 15-yard run down the sideline. On the very next play, running back Lonnie Pryor had an amazing run that looked like it was stuffed at the line, but he drug NC State defenders 8 yards to get himself into the endzone for a touchdown as FSU took a 17-0 lead.

On NC State's next drive, their offense continued to struggled as FSU's defense continued to harass Mike Glennon with their front four. After an NC State punt that hit an FSU player in the elbow and nearly recovered by the Wolfback, the Noles picked up a drive killing holding penalty on first down and wound up going three-and-out. The Noles were able to pin NC State deep on the punt however, downing it on the 6-yard line.

The Wolfpack was able to get out of being pinned deep thanks to some nice throws by Mike Glennon, but Glennon was picked off by Xavier Rhodes when he tried to take a shot deep and overthrew his receiver right into Rhodes hands. The receiver was double covered on the play. The Noles offense made the Wolfpack pay for the turnover. Thanks to a 32-yard slip screen to Jermaine Thomas, getting the Noles in the redzone. Two plays later Manuel hit Kenny Shaw in the endzone for a 20-yard touchdown pass and the 24-0 lead.

At the half, Manuel is 17 of 22 for 212 yards and a touchdown.

The NC State Wolfpack stalled the Florida State Seminoles on their opening drive, but promptly went three-and-out when they got the football. After a long punt return by Greg Reid, where if not for stepping out of bounds, would have been a marvelous return for a touchdown, the Noles offense got going. Quarterback E.J. Manuel hit receiver Christian Green on the sideline that Green took 32 yards down the the NC State 7-yard line. The Noles scored on the very next play on an option, as Manual pitched the ball late to freshman Devonta Freeman, who scored the touchdown from 5 yards out as the Noles took an early 7-0 lead. On the play, Manuel sucked in four NC State defenders, Freeing up Freeman for the easy pitch.

NC State's next drive stalled out after picking up a first down this time, but was forced to punt after consecutive incomplete passes from quarterback Mike Glennon, the Wolfpack punted once again. The Noles added to their lead on the next drive with a 43-yard field goal from kicker Dustin Hopkins. The drive stalled after back to back big gains in the passing game from Manuel, who hit tight end Nick O'Leary for 25 yards. Ultimately, the drive stalled and FSU added a field goal to push their lead to 10-0.

Florida State, 4-3 (2-2), will be looking to continue their upward trend against the upstart NC State Wolfpack, 4-3 (1-2), after starting the season 2-3, with losses to Oklahoma, Clemson and Wake Forest, in an Atlantic Division elimination game.

The Seminoles began the season with high expectations and a lofty ranking, only to stumble multiple times out of the gate. NC State has seen mixed results, but are playing their best football of the season right now, coming off of a win against a now good-looking Virginia team.

Looking forward to N.C. State this weekend, what can we learn from Florida State's man handling of Maryland last week?

With three losses under their belt, the fallen-from-grace Seminoles are still looking at this season as a rebuilding effort. The ACC championship is all but out of reach with Clemson surging week-to-week, so we are playing for a bowl game. But does that mean Florida State has lost the excitement?? By no means! This week the Florida State Seminoles are looking forward to an all-out battle against the N.C. State Wolfpack, because last week they manhandled the Maryland Terrapins.

It went like this:

That was Maryland's frightened quarterback failing to slide to avoid a tackle. That is the fear the Unconquered will strike in the Wolfpack's eyes this week. How do I know? The Noles have much to play for and could finish the season a nine-win team with an entertaining bowl game. The Maryland game showed that determination and much more.

Here's what else we think we learned from FSU's most recent win:

1. Whooping up on Maryland was a sign of greatness.

Most people would counter here and say, "Come on, Maryland has only two wins on the season!" - but take a look. They upset Miami in week one, and then lost very close games to West Virginia, Georgia Tech, and Clemson in consecutive weeks, will all three opponents ranked. Then they came to Doak Campbell. This is not a team that get's deflated. This is not a team that backs down. And we took them down. Maryland won't be a contender this year, but they normally put up one hell of a fight, and we routed them. Go Noles.

Looking forward: N.C. State has four wins, including then-ranked Georgia Tech and non-factor Virginia, and also a loss to Wake Forest. While this doesn't sound like as impressive a resume, the Wolves average 30+ points per game and have a quarterback that has slung over 1700 yards and 19 TDs, comparable to Wake Forest's Price (1800+ yards, 14 TDs). In other words, a threat.

2. When E.J. Manuel is healthy, the Seminoles win games.

Plain and simple, when E.J. plays well, the team plays well. Florida State's has lost three games: Oklahoma, Clemson, and Wake Forest. Each of those losses featured an injured E.J. Manuel and forced the Seminoles to turn to the freshman back up Clint Trickett. With E.J. at the helm since then, we saw a nice display of his no-longer-injured shoulder against Duke, and then the exact same score (41 points) posted against a more formidable opponent in Maryland.

Manuel averaged 10.2 yards in the air for 268 yards, 1 touchdown, and only 1 pick.

(Note: I am not hating on Trickett, he pushed the Noles to 30 points at Clemson and threw a TD over Oklahoma for the lead. Still, he has much to learn, weight to gain, and the Noles also happened to lose those games. he was downright awful against Wake.)

3. Florida State has a distinct home field advantage.

The same Maryland offense that wreaked havoc on Clemson and Miami looked pitiful in Doak Campbell Stadium. Florida State has three losses, with only one at home - then #1 Oklahoma, in which momentum was not lost until Manuel was injured. Last year's only loss at home was a 2-point upset from North Carolina and this week face N.C. State, who has only won against Virginia on the road. The Doak is an efficient weapon, and FSU will continue that trend for Parent's Weekend on Saturday.

4. The running game is alive and well!

Last week Florida State was still searching for a running game. With key injuries to all of last years leading rushers, the Seminoles finally turned to freshman Devonte Freeman against Duke, and we went wild. This week he proved it was no fluke. He had 11 carries for 100 yards and a TD, his second consecutive week with the most carries for the Seminole offense, at least 100 yards and a touchdown. Impressive. As a freshman, he stands 5'8" and 200 lbs. For comparison, Maurice Jones Drew is 26 and stands 5'7" at 208 lbs.

5. The defense played with confidence and discipline.

Wait, what? It's true. The defense held the Terps to 3.72 yards per play before garbage-time and passed the eye-test of a team that was well prepared and not messing around, as opposed to the "bunch of kids having fun" mentality.

Noles fans had been calling for Mark Stoop's head the last few weeks, and had yet to recant after Florida State held Duke to 16 points, but holding off Maryland to 16 points seems to have quelled most fears. When the defense faces the Wolfpack on Saturday they will see an offense with twice the ability of Maryland (judging by passing yards and points scored) and will have to show they can stop a team in the air as easily as they stopped the Terps running game.

The Seminoles (4-3, 2-2) host the Wolfpack (4-3, 1-2) this Saturday.

This Saturday, Oct. 29, the Florida State Seminoles (4-3, 2-2) host the North Carolina State Wolfpack (4-3, 1-2) in an Atlantic Coast Conference showdown. Kickoff is scheduled for noon Eastern, and the ESPNU crew of Rob Stone and Danny Kanell will have the call.

In each of its last two games, the Seminoles have easily dispatched an ACC foe by a 41-16 final score. They can extend their winning streak to three--a season-best--if they defeat the Wolfpack today. But N.C. State is coming off two straight wins of its own, having defeated the Central Michigan Chippewas and the Virginia Cavaliers. Saturday's is a matchup of two teams on the rise in the ACC.

Florida State has dominated its head-to-head matchups with the Wolfpack, with a 20-9 record all-time, but the Wolfpack upset the then No. 16-ranked Seminoles, 28-24, in the teams' most recent meeting. The Seminoles squandered the 21-7 edge they held at halftime, allowed the Wolfpack to score the go-ahead touchdown on a fourth-and-goal with less than seven minutes to play, and then fumbled on their final drive. Clearly, they're hoping for a better result in this meeting.

The LSU Tigers and Alabama Crimson Tide rank No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, for the second straight week, which illustrates the strength of Florida's competition in the SEC. But they aren't the only teams representing the SEC: the Arkansas Razorbacks (No. 10), South Carolina Gamecocks (No. 13), Georgia Bulldogs (No. 22), and Auburn Tigers (No. 23) also appear in the latest rankings.

Meanwhile, the latest BCS rankings also include some of the Seminoles' rivals in the ACC, specifically the Clemson Tigers (No. 5) and the Virginia Tech Hokies.

Finally, the West Virginia Mountaineers, at No. 25, stand as the lone Big East representative.

Thanks largely to the SEC's dominance, teams that share conferences with the Sunshine State's top clubs account for nine of the top 25 teams in the BCS. Perhaps in another year or so some Florida teams will rank among them.
