The Rutgers Scarlet Knights were able to surge back from a 10-0 hole to win the game on a San San Te 37-yard field goal in overtime, 20-17.

The Bulls went up 10-0 on a B.J. Daniels touchdown pass and a Maikon Bonani field goal in the first quarter. That score would stand until the third quarter, when Rutgers was able to get on the board with a 33-yard Te field goal to make the score 10-3. The field goal was set up by the Bulls' Victor Marc trying to field a rolling punt and fumbling it away inside the USF 15-yard line.

The Bulls, however, extended their lead to two touchdowns midway through the fourth quarter with a 3-yard touchdown run by Demetris Murray. But the scoreboard would only read 17-3 for a matter of seconds, as Rutgers would score on the ensuing play, a 98-yard kickoff return by Jeremy Deering. The score would stay 17-10 in favor of the Bulls until the 1:08 mark, when Rutgers QB Chas Dodd threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Coleman on 2nd and 25 to knot the score. After a punt and a Dodd interception, USF had one more chance to win it in regulation, but Bonani shanked a 27-yard field goal on the final play, and the game moved into overtime.

Rutgers was the only team to score in overtime on the Te field goal. The Scarlet Knights move to 6-3 (3-2) with the win and the Bulls, once a 4-0 team, fall to 4-4 (0-4) and suffer their fourth-straight loss.

The second half is just underway in Piscataway, New Jersey, and the South Florida Bulls lead the Rutgers Scarlet Knights 10-0. While neither team has been terribly impressive, USF got their offense in gear during the second quarter and launched two scoring drives to end the half.

The Bulls got on the board midway through the second quarter. After a short Justin Doerner punt, USF drove 58 yards on nine plays for the opening touchdown. The Bulls drove inside the Rutgers’ 20 (the only such drive for either team so far tonight), and following a sack of B.J. Daniels, Victor Marc caught a middle screen from Daniels and ran behind a convoy of blockers for a 23-yard touchdown.

Rutgers responded after the score, putting together their best drive of the game. They reached the USF 31-yard line, but then quarterback Gary Nova took two consecutive sacks. On the second one, Ryne Giddins got the sack, a forced fumble, a recovered fumble, and even returned it five yards, to the USF 49. After a short drive, Maikon Bonani kicked a 43-yard field goal to give the Bulls their current lead.

USF held the Scarlet Knights to just 89 total yards in the first half, including -2 rushing yards. That has forced Nova to throw more, and while the Bulls have yet to intercept him, Nova hasn’t been very accurate.

USF looks to avoid its first in-season four-game losing streak ever and also pick up their first win at Rutgers since 2005 in tonight’s matchup.

Rather than controlling the game with the run, like Rutgers did when they had Ray Rice a few years ago, this year’s Scarlet Knights are relying on freshman quarterback Gary Nova and Biletnikoff Award finalist Mohamed Sanu at wide receiver. Other talented receivers like Mark Harrison and Brandon Coleman also give Nova options in the passing game, although they have been more inconsistent. Thanks to better play-calling and a more suitable offensive scheme, the Rutgers pass protection has improved greatly from last year, when they gave up an FBS-worst 62 sacks. But as a freshman, Nova is still prone to making bad decisions and giving the ball away. USF’s ability to force turnovers and take advantage of Nova’s mistakes will be crucial.

When the Bulls have the ball, it will be important to avoid third-and-long situations. B.J. Daniels must be sharp in directing the USF running game — they can’t afford negative rushing plays, so he will need to make the right decision consistently on the option runs in the Bulls’ usual game plan. Some of the quick-hitting option runs and shovel passes that slowed down the Rutgers blitz last year may make an appearance again in this game. USF has to give themselves options on third down, because the Scarlet Knights would like nothing better than to get USF into a situation where they have to throw, then bring pressure and try and add to their sack (26) and interception (15) totals. This is a much faster and athletic defense than the one the Bulls lined up against last year, and that has given coach Greg Schiano the freedom to dictate the game defensively, like he is accustomed to doing.

The special teams battle looks like a standoff. Neither team punts the ball well — USF’s Justin Brockhaus-Kann and Rutgers’ Justin Doerner each average under 40 yards per kick, although Doerner has placed nearly half his punts inside the opponents’ 20-yard line. The Bulls’ Maikon Bonani has an edge over Scarlet Knights kicker San San Te, who’s made two 50+ yard field goals but also missed two under 30 yards. USF will need to be wary of Rutgers’ ability to block kicks, and their kickoff returners Jordan Thomas and Jeremy Deering (who had a big game as a receiver last year against the Bulls).

The South Florida Bulls are traveling to New Jersey to take on the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. The Bulls are entering the game as slight favorites, although they're currently holding a three-game losing streak and they haven't had much luck historically against the Knights.

The Bulls have never lost four consecutive games in a season, so that should be sure to light a fire in their bellies. They're also looking to pick up their first Big East divisional win this season, as they're 0-3 in that regard. South Florida will need to be on their guard against potential Rutgers trick plays, and will be attempting to contain a tough passing game by the Scarlet Knights.

You always have to be careful for trick plays when you play the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. The South Florida Bulls have fallen victim to three of them against Rutgers in recent years -- a fake field goal and a fake punt in 2007, and a wide receiver pass by Mohamed Sanu last year. The field goal fake and the pass by Sanu both went for touchdowns, and after watching Sanu's pass unfold in slow motion from the sideline in the two teams' last meeting, USF coach Skip Holtz realizes that you can never sleep on Greg Schiano's team.

"He's going to run fake field goals and fake punts and trick plays... You've got to guard against it. You have to make sure you cross the t's and dot the i's. A field goal or a PAT is not just a play off. You have to make sure you stay focused on your man and who you have in coverage. If you're sleeping, that's one that will come up."

The Bulls don't have the strongest track record defending trick plays -- the two in 2007 were among several that burned them during their slide out of the national rankings that year. Earlier this season, the UTEP Miners fooled USF with a fake punt, and the concussion Terrence Mitchell sustained wiping out Miners punter Ian Campbell has kept Mitchell out of action ever since. On the other side, the Bulls haven't run a successful trick play since the 2008 St. Petersburg Bowl, when wide receiver Theo Wilson threw a 14-yard pass to quarterback Matt Grothe. (Although you could consider the incomplete pass from Victor Marc to fellow receiver Andre Davis against Cincinnati two weeks ago as a success, since it drew a pass interference penalty on Camerron Cheatham.)

The Bulls have never lost four straight in the same season. To avoid that fate, they'll need to get their first win at Rutgers since 2005.

The South Florida Bulls have done a lot of things in their 15 seasons of football, but this Saturday they'll face the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in an attempt to avoid a dubious first: their first four-game losing streak in a single season. At 0-3 in Big East play, USF has been reduced to the role of spoiler, but getting to a bowl game for a seventh consecutive season is still easily in reach.

USF fans are well aware of their team's checkered history against Rutgers, The Bulls are just 2-4 all-time against the Scarlet Knights, with wins in 2005 and 2010 bookending four straight losses. Although the 2007 loss in Piscataway ended USF's run up the national rankings, it's the 2009 loss that may stick in the current team's craw the most. In one of their dreaded Thursday night games, the Bulls had maybe their worst performance in school history, losing 31-0 and looking so feeble that noted football authorities Craig James and Jesse Palmer were trying not to make fun of them in the ESPN booth. B.J. Daniels started that game as a redshirt freshman and completed just 7 of 17 passes for 126 yards and two interceptions.

The 2009 meeting was controlled by the Rutgers running game, as Joe Martinek ran for 128 yards and a touchdown. But this year, the Rutgers offense is driven by two top-notch wide receivers, which has made freshman quarterback Gary Nova's job much easier. Mohamed Sanu already has 70 catches for nearly 800 yards on the season, while fellow Biletnikoff Award candidate Mark Harrison is averaging nearly 20 yards per reception. With the Scarlet Knights' running game struggling badly, Sanu's huge year is helping keep the Rutgers offense afloat. (Sanu only needs 23 receptions in his last four -- and likely five -- games to break Larry Fitzgerald's Big East record of 92 receptions in a season.)

A big reason that Rutgers went 4-8 last season was the dropoff of their defense. Normally well-known for their hard-hitting, physical presence, in 2010 the unit finished last in the Big East in yards per game, last in rushing yards allowed, 7th in points allowed, and last in sacks. But this year the Scarlet Knights have rebounded defensively. They already have more sacks (26) and interceptions (15) in eight games than they had all of last season, and they rank second in the Big East in yards allowed per game.

Saturday's game at High Point Solutions Stadium kicks off at 7:00pm Eastern time, and the game will be streamed exclusively on ESPN 3. Check your Internet provider to see if they offer this service.
