The Tampa Bay Lightning rallied back from a two goal deficit to defeat the Chicago Blackhawks 5-4 in overtime on Friday night. Vincent Lecavalier scored the game-winning goal with 53.7 seconds left in overtime after a Martin St. Louis pass on a two on one. Lecavalier now leads the NHL with four game-winning goals.

There were eight goals scored in the middle stanza tonight, including a hat-trick from Steven Stamkos. Stamkos now has four career hat tricks which is mind blowing thinking he has only been in the league for that many years. With the hat trick, Stamkos is now second in the NHL in scoring with nine goals.

If it wasn't for the Lightning offense, this game would have been ugly because its defense sure wasn't the reason it won this game. With eight neutral zone turnovers, Tampa Bay showcased another poor defensive effort as it has throughout the season. The Lightning were outshot 15-8 in the first period and Dwayne Roloson is a big reason the Lightning stayed in this one, by making some key saves in the early. Anyone who even utters a syllable that merely questions Roloson's play tonight did not watch the game or does not know a thing about hockey, or BOTH. Just because there were four goals let in tonight, doesn't mean it's the goaltenders fault.

Tonight's start wasn't the most desirable of starts for Tampa Bay, but just like it has done so far this season, it relied on its "no-quit" attitude to get the job done.

"We have known for a while we never quit, we have the character," Stamkos said. "We didn't start the way we wanted to, they had a lot of shots in the beginning but once we got settled in we are a tough team to play against. I don't think they really got much in the 3rd period scoring chance wise."

Tampa Bay got on the board first when Stamkos scored on a rebound 15 seconds into the second period. That lead did not last for the Lightning because 20 seconds later, Brett Connolly was called for tripping and Chicago capitalized on the power play with a goal from Patrick Sharp at 1:05. It was quite unfortunate for the Lightning, the call was a pretty bad one.

Tampa Bay did find the net again when Brett Connolly scored his second NHL goal, putting the Lightning up 2-1 after pouncing on a puck in the crease. Then, it was all Blackhawks. Chicago scored three goals in 65 seconds including tallies from Marian Hossa, Dan Carcillo, and Sharpe. That's when Lightning coach Guy Boucher called a timeout to round up the troops. Post timeout, the Lightning were a different team. Yeah there were still a few turnovers, but there was a fire lit underneath those players and damn did they look motivated. The Lightning began generating a lot more pressure and chances against Ray Emery, including goals from Stamkos at 11:45 and 19:27 of the second period.

The Lightning played a lot of dump and chase in the third period and obviously shifted focus from offensive play to improving on defense, which it surely did. After a back and forth third period, the game made its way to overtime and that's when Lecavalier lit the lamp after a perfect pass from St.Louis.

Thank god Stamkos and the offense showed up tonight. If he didn't, this game would have been an out of hand one for the Lightning. I hope Tampa Bay doesn't keep having efforts like this on defense, or Steve Yzerman needs to get that top four defensemen, STAT.

Notes...Lightning defenseman Marc Andre Bergeron had two assists tonight and now leads the NHL in assists with 13. Bergeron also leads NHL defensemen in points with 15... Martin St. Louis and Patrick Kane both contributed three assists for their respective clubs.

The Tampa Bay Lightning started the second period scoring frenzy 15 seconds into the period when Steven Stamkos popped in a rebound behind Ray Emery. 20 seconds later, Brett Connolly was handed a very questionable tripping penalty that resulted in a power play goal for the Chicago Blackhawks at 1:05, when Patrick Sharpe put one in behind Roloson after after a textbook cross-slot pass from Jonathan Toews.

A few minutes later, Brett Connolly jumped on the puck in the crease after fighting off of a few Chicago players, giving the Lightning its second lead of the game at 15:05. Marian Hossa tied the game at two at 6:17 of the second period. The Lightning showcased more of that shaky defense it has throughout the season, with a few neutral zone turnovers, including a Marc Andre Bergeron giveaway that resulted in a breakaway goal for Dan Carcillo, giving Chicago a 3-2 lead. The Blackhawks continued the pressure in the offensive zone and Sharp scored his second goal of the game twelve seconds later putting the Blackhawks up by two goals.

After Sharp scored, Lightning coach Guy Boucher called a timeout and it seemed to light the fire underneath the Lightning, who came out flying after that timeout. Stamkos had his second goal of the game at 11:45 of the second period after a great centering feed from Teddy Purcell.

With 32.2 seconds left in the second period, Stamkos saw the net again, netting his fourth career hat trick. Even though the Lightning are playing poorly on defense, its offense is doing what it needs to do to get by.

The Lightning's four goals in the second period ties a season high for goals score in one period this season.

After an uneventful first period, the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Chicago Blackhawks have both come out swinging. After a furious second period, the Lightning and Blackhawks are all tied up, 4-4, at the second intermission.

Goalies Dwayne Roloson and Ray Emery certainly have their work cut out for them tonight. Despite both goalies being perfect in the first period, there have been a stunning eight goals scored in the second 20:00.

Leading the charge is Steven Stamkos, who has already pulled off the hat trick, scoring three of Tampa Bay's second-period goals. His third goal was a power play goal that tied it up for the Lightning with just over 30 seconds left in the second. Adding to the scoring for the Lightning was Brett Connolly, whose backhand put the Lightning up 2-1 early in the second period.

On the Chicago side, Patrick Sharp has two of the four Blackhawk goals.

A taut game in the early going has turned into a good old-fashioned shoot-out. This is definitely a game to keep your eye on if you're not already tuned in.

Tampa Bay Lightning goaltender Dwayne Roloson was quite busy in the first period, facing 15 shots on goal. Without him between the pipes, this one could have gotten ugly quick for Tampa Bay. The Lightning have eight shots of their own but have yet to generate some real offensive pressure on Ray Emery. There were also a few too many neutral zone turnovers that need to be addressed.

If the Lightning are going to be victorious in this one, it has to stop relying solely on its goaltenders. Chicago will not stop generating shots (and high quality ones that is) on Roloson and if Roloson is going to face 15 shots each period, Tampa Bay’s offense needs to return the favor by spending more time in Chicago’s zone. The Blackhawks are going to shoot at just about everything and the Lightning need to take a page out of Chicago’s book and do that in the next two periods.

Chicago had some impressive opportunities on the power play at 8:55 of the first period after Ryan Shannon was called off for holding but Roloson made some key saves to keep this game scoreless.

The Chicago Blackhawks are visiting Florida to take on the Tampa Bay Lightning, and after the first period, goalie Dwayne Roloson is working hard to keep this one scoreless.

The Blackhawks have taken 15 shots on goal so far compared to Tampa Bay's eight. Roloson has been perfect so far, however, and none of Chicago's shots has been able to find the net. The Blackhawks are probably finding the Lightning a tougher team to score on than they had expected.

Only one penalty so far in this game, as Ryan Shannon receives two minutes for holding halfway through the period. Ryan Malone and Steven Stamkos have two shots each for Tampa Bay.

The Lightning are doing a good job of keeping this one close. If Roloson can stay sharp, Tampa Bay has a great chance at grabbing a big win here.

Expect a tough game tonight for the Tampa Bay Lightning. Coming off a 4-2 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday, the Bolts will play host to the formidable Chicago Blackhawks, ranked 4th in the league, tonight at the St. Pete Times Forum. The Blackhawks (8-2-2) have done well for themselves in this first month of the season and plan on adding a fourth to their three-game winning streak after coming off a 3-2 shootout win at Florida on Thursday. The 2010 Stanley Cup champions look like their setting themselves for another run for the cup.

It's a good thing for the Lightning that the only time they will have to face the Blackhawks this season won't be on the road. The Bolts' struggles on the road (2-4-2) have put them at the top of the lower third of the NHL point rankings. The Lighting's performance at home offers hope though (3-1-0). "We love to be home. The energy is great," Lightning Head Coach Guy Boucher said of the St. Pete Times Forum. However, the Blackhawks won't as much lose this game as the Lighting will have to win it. The pressure is on for the Lightning to dig out their fourth consecutive home win to add it to their previous three.

The Bolts will have to dig pretty far though. With 36 goals, Chicago is the 5th most scoring team in the NHL. Match that up with a Lightning defense that has been inconsistent for the entire start of the season (including a third period lapse that sealed Carolina's victory on Tuesday night) and this game might get squirrelly. Chicago's power-kill is superb with a 91.9 percent kill-rate, the third-best in the NHL. This doesn't bode well for Tampa's 15.8 percent power-play conversion rate, the 21st in the NHL. The Lightning will need to focus on 5-on-5 to convert. However, they need not be afraid of drawing a few penalties. As formidable as Chicago's 5-on-5 offense may be, their 8.7 percent power-play conversion is the second worst in the entire league (poor St. Louis's singing the Blues).

The one thing the Lightning can't do tonight is be lazy. The Bolts that we've seen thus far is a lackadaisical team that coasts through the first two-thirds of a game and finally wakes up in the third just in time to watch themselves loose. "Except for the third period, we didn't earn anything," Boucher said of his Bolts after Tuesday's game. There is no doubt that the Tampa Bay Lightning has the skill to take down the Chicago Blackhawks. But do they have the heart?

Players to Watch

-Steven Stamkos (C): The 21 year old Stamkos leads the Lightning with 6 goals scored. His six game streak of receiving points (for goals and assists) was broken in Carolina. Team Captain Vincent Lecavalier (C) has 9 points.
