Going into last night’s Versus matchup between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Philadelphia Flyers, everyone thought the game would end up being a battle of the offenses. The Lightning are missing multiple key defensive players and have struggled on defense early this season (3.0 GA per game), and the Flyers have the most powerful offensive attack in the league right now (3.8 goals per game). Tampa Bay is no pushover, but this looked like a matchup made in heaven for the Flyers. If they pressed their offensive attack, they were sure to have a good chance at winning.

In a baffling turn of events, though, the Flyers refused to attack the Lightning’s defense. The Bolts were playing their typical 1-3-1 defensive arrangement — commonly referred to as The Trap — but the Flyers didn’t want anything to do with it. They hung back for the majority of the game, controlling the puck in their own zone — completely motionless on occasion — and waited for the Lightning to attack and switch to a forecheck. The Lightning didn’t take the bait, though, so the end result was the Flyers never put strong offensive pressure on the Bolts. They only took 15 shots all game, even after cutting back on their stalling tactics after the first period.

The Versus announcers seemed to view the Flyers’ strategy as a “statement” about the 1-3-1 trap, but if so, Philly didn’t get the point across. The Lightning fell behind 1-0 after allowing a power play goal to Scott Hartnell in the second period, but they tied it with 12 minutes to go in the third period on a power play goal by Marc-Andre Bergeron. They took a total of 24 shots and almost won the game late in the third period, but rookie Brett Connolly whiffed on golden opportunity in front of the net. He eventually redeemed himself, though, scoring the winning goal in overtime.

After the game, the Philadelphia players expressed some frustration at the Lightning and their defensive strategy. Their head coach Peter Laviolette had some choice words to say:

“They have a set forecheck in the neutral zone, so we have a set breakout," he said. "As soon as we get some pressure, we’ll get into our outs. If they don’t want us to stand there, they should come after us. Why are they going to just stand there?” (NHL.com)

Why are they going to stand there? Because that’s how they play the game, and it allowed them to beat the high-powered Flyer offense. The best way to get the Lightning to stop playing the 1-3-1 is to shred the defense and force them to change strategies. But by refusing to attack, the Flyers sent a very different message: we can’t beat that formation, and we’re afraid to engage it.

Some of the Flyers stated after the game that they hoped the NHL was watching and would take action. If other teams are smart, though, that action won’t be to play less of the Trap against the Flyers….it’ll be to play more.

The Tampa Bay Lightning had too many penalties in the second period. Although they killed off two back-to-back penalties, the Flyers were able to capitalize on the third power play opportunity they had in the period when Scott Hartnell tipped in a shot at 8:34 of second period, putting the Flyers ahead 1-0.

The number one concern for the Lightning coming in to this game was the play of their defense, which has really showcased an improved effort on the blue-line tonight. There haven’t been too many turnovers and Tampa Bay has only allowed the Flyers to muster up three shots in the second period.

The first period of this game started rather strangely. The Philadelphia Flyers utilized a play, the four corners rule. This is when a team’s defense remains in their own zone, which is an attempt to slow the game down. The Flyers did this four times in the first period, and it was honestly ridiculous. Hey philly, you want to figure out Tampa Bay’s 1-3-1 system, handle the puck in the neutral zone, skate down the ice, and generate shots on Dwayne Roloson. Play hockey. Stop wasting time.

Other than that, there’s wasn’t much worth noting so far in this one. The Lightning have the edge in shots with seven and the Flyers have six. It’s a surprise there were even that many.

Dwayne Roloson and the Tampa Bay Lightning look for their longest home winning streak since 1997 and winning another home game won't be and easy against a potent Philadelphia offense that has scored a league-leading 56 goals this season.

The Tampa Bay Lightning (7-5-2) have heated up as of late, winning three out of their last four games. Tampa Bay is looking for its fifth straight victory on home ice, and extending that streak won't be easy as the Lightning face the Philadelphia Flyers (8-4-2) who have also won three out of their last four games.

Tampa Bay's recent victory's have come in dramatic fashion including two come-from-behind victory's last week. First, the Lightning erased a two goal deficit to defeat Chicago 4-3 in overtime on Friday and erased a three goal deficit to beat the Florida Panthers 4-3 in a shootout on Sunday. The Lightning's last three games have all been close affairs, being decided by only one goal.

This game tonight is going to be interesting. The Lightning are playing remarkable at home, looking for the team's fifth straight victory at the St. Pete Times Forum. The Lightning have outscored their opponents 13-5 in that four game winning streak. The Flyers though are playing well on the road, boasting a 4-1 record and searching for the franchise's best road start in 18 seasons.

The Flyers are proving to be a dangerous team offensively and the club leads the NHL in goals scored with 56. In the last three games, the Flyers have scored 17 goals, including goals from eight different players in Saturday's 9-2 shellacking of Columbus. The Flyers have five players with at least five goals this season.

With weapons like Claude Giroux, Jaromir Jagr, and James Van Riemsdyk, Philadelphia's high-flying offense has proved to be the number one concern for Tampa Bay. The team has focused on defense in practice this week and will be without its top two players on defense tonight. Victor Hedman will miss his second game with an upper body injury he sustained in Friday night's 4-3 win over the Blackhawks and Mattias Ohlund remains on injured reserve with his knee injury. Tampa Bay's defense has come out flat on multiple occasions this season even with Hedman in the lineup. If the Lightning are going to avoid falling behind early, there must not be a flurry of neutral zone turnovers because the Flyers will take advantage of that and the game will get out of hand quick. The Lightning cannot allow too many scoring chances for the Flyers and they need to lessen the load on Dwayne Roloson. Tampa Bay has been embarrassingly outshot in the first period in multiple contests this season and correcting this mistake without the team's top two defensemen will be a difficult task.

The Flyers will get their own boost on the blue-line, with Chris Pronger expected in the lineup. Pronger has been out since he suffered an eye inury on Oct. 24 against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Philadelphia has killed off all 13 penalties in the team's 3-0-1 stretch, but could use Pronger on the power play, going 1-for-19 in the last four games.

Players to watch... Lightning: Steven Stamkos has nine goals in his last nine games...Flyers: Jaromir Jagr is on a seven-game points streak, with six goals and five assists... Claude Giroux has nine points in five games...

Injury report: Ohlund (knee) Ryan Malone (upper body, day to day) Hedman (upper body, day to day). Pronger (eye) expected in lineup, Matt Read (upper-body, day to day).
