The Michigan St. Spartans rallied from a 16-0 deficit to defeat the Georgia Bulldogs, 33-30, in triple overtime in the Outback Bowl. The Spartans blocked Blair Walsh's 47-yard field goal attempt at the end of the third overtime to complete the stunning comeback:

Had Walsh's kick connected, Georgia would have sent the game to a fourth overtime.

Spartans quarterback Kirk Cousins threw his third interception of the game on the first drive, meaning the Bulldogs needed only to kick a field goal to win the game. Georgia gained two yards on its first play from scrimmage, a two-yard run by Carlton Thomas. On the next play, quarterback Aaron Murray ran the ball directly into the line, trying to move the ball away from the hash marks in orer to set up a straighter kick for Walsh. On third down, Georgia lined up for the game-winning field goal, but Walsh's 42-yard attempt sailed wide right.

The senior kicker redeemed himself in double-overtime, nailing a 47-yard attempt on the first drive to give Georgia a 30-27 lead and force Michigan State to face defeat unless it scored. But the Spartans responded with a 33-yard kick by Dan Conroy, set up by a seven-yard pass from Cousins to Keshawn Martin.

Running back Le'Veon Bell played a huge role in setting Conroy up for what proved to be the winning field goal. The sophomore running back gained 11 yards on three carries and tallied an eight-yard reception for the Spartans, accounting for all of their yards on the drive. Bell finished with 22 touches for 87 yards and two touchdowns on the day.

The Outback Bowl victory ends a long drought for Michigan State, which had lost its last five bowl games; its most recent bowl win came in the 2001 Silicon Valley Bowl. Georgia, meanwhile, ran its bowl losing streak to two games as it fell, 10-6, in the 2010 Liberty Bowl.

Despite trailing by 16 points at halftime, the Michigan St. Spartans rallied to tie the Georgia Bulldogs at 27 apiece at the end of regulation. Thus, the 2012 Outback Bowl is headed to overtime.

With 19 seconds remaining in regulation, Le'Veon Bell found the endzone for the second time in the game with a run from inside the one-yard line. Dan Conroy drilled the extra point despite a poor snap, tying the game at 27. Bell's run capped a ten-play, 85-yard drive. Spartans quarterback Kirk Cousins played brilliantly, gaining 65 yards through the air and another 20 on the ground.

Georgia took over with one timeout remaining and elected to take a knee.

The Georgia Bulldogs owned the first half of the Outback Bowl against the Michigan St. Spartans, racing out to a 16-0 lead, but the Spartans rallied in the third quarter. Michigan State blanked the Bulldogs, 14-0, in the third to make the score 16-14 headed into the fourth.

The Spartans got into the scoring column with an eight-yard run from La'Veon Bell; a Darqueze Dennard interception of an Aaron Murray pass attempt set up that possession for the Spartans. Michigan State went for two and converted as Kirk Cousins hooked up with Brian Linthicum.

Later in the period, Dennard made his second interception of the game, picking off Murray and returning it 38 yards for a touchdown. The Spartans boldly elected to go for two once again, trying to tie the score, but Cousins' pass fell incomplete.

After one half of the 2012 Outback Bowl, the Georgia Bulldogs own a commanding 16-0 edge against the Michigan St. Spartans behind three highlight-reel scoring plays.

In the first period, Georgia punter Drew Butler pinned the Spartans deep in their own territory, on the two-yard line. On Michigan State's first offensive play of the game, Kirk Cousins threw to Keshawn Martin in the Spartans' own end zone, where Georgia cornerback Brandon Boykin took him down for a safety.

The second quarter proved uneventful until Aaron Murray hooked up with Tavarres King for an 80-yard touchdown, after which Murray flew like a jet plane:

A three-and-out on the Spartans' next possession forced them to punt. Boykin fielded it inside Georgia's five-yard line and returned it for a touchdown:

The Spartans had just 72 yards of total offense in the first half.

The Michigan State offense will face a tough test in trying to run the ball against the Georgia defense when the two teams clash in the Outback Bowl on Jan. 2. The Bulldogs allowed the third-fewest rushing yards in the Southeastern conference this season, and Spartans' offensive coordinator Pat Roushar thinks he knows why as Greg Johnson of The Grand Rapids Press reports.

"Their starting nose guard is 351 pounds (John Jenkins), and the guy that they bring in behind him is probably 320 pounds," he said. "You know, that’s going to be a challenge in itself.

"They are very, very good against the run, and when you become one-dimensional, they can get after the quarterback. I think they’re second or third in the Southeastern Conference with, I believe, 34 sacks or something like that, so they present a lot of problems."

Michigan State had the second-fewest rushing yards in the Big Ten this season, so it'll be interesting to see how the Spartans handle this apparent mismatch on the ground. Will they even attempt to establish the run or will they rely on their passing game, ranked No. 1 in the conference in passing yardage, to stare the Bulldogs down.

The Georgia Bulldogs and Michigan State Spartans will meet in the 2012 Outback Bowl in Tampa, Florida. The game will feature the runner-ups for the SEC and Big 10 championship games. The Bulldogs lost to LSU in Atlanta, 42-10. The Spartans on the other hand lost a close game in somewhat anti-climatic fashion on a running into the kicker penalty, 42-39.

The Outback Bowl is played annually at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay, home of the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Outback Bowl is not the first bowl game in Tampa however, as the Cigar Bowl was played in downtown Tampa from 1947-1954. Originally the bowl was called the Hall of Fame Bowl from 1986-1994 before Outback Steakhouse became the title sponsor. The game regularly matches up the Big Ten against the SEC and is typically played on January 1st, but will be played on Monday this year because it falls on a Sunday.

The game will be broadcast live on ABC and will be called by part of the Monday Night Football crew, Mike Tirico, Jon Gruden & Lisa Salters.

Game date, time:1:00 pm ET, Monday, January 2nd
