Jawanza Poland scored 16 points as the South Florida Bulls knocked off the #19 Louisville Cardinals 58-51 at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville on Wednesday night. The win keeps USF alive for a double-bye in the Big East tournament, but more importantly, they finally got the marquee win they desperately needed in their bid to make the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1992.

The Bulls scored the first basket of the second half to extend their lead to 24-17. But Louisville answered with a 17-6 run over the next five-plus minutes, finishing it with a Chris Smith three-pointer that gave the Cardinals a 34-30 advantage. After a few minutes of fencing and parrying, Toarlyn Fitzpatrick tipped in a Victor Rudd miss to tie the score at 41 with 8:22 to play.

From there USF’s tenacious defense went to work. Louisville only scored four points from the 8:22 mark until there were just 40 seconds left. By then, the Bulls had taken a 50-45 lead, and they made eight of ten at the free-throw line down the stretch to finish off a critical win.

The Bulls finish the regular season on Saturday against the West Virginia Mountaineers at the Tampa Bay Times Forum. Tipoff is at noon.

The USF Bulls used a balanced scoring attack to take a 22-17 lead over the 19th ranked Louisville Cardinals tonight at the KFC Yum! Center. Seven Bulls have scored already for Stan Heath's squad, with Ron Anderson Jr., Anthony Collins, and Jawanza Poland leading the way with 4 points. Hugh Robertson and Blake Nash have each chipped in 3 points while Anderson Jr. and Toarlyn Fitzpatrick lead the Bulls with 4 rebounds a piece. Kyle Kuric leads all scorers with 7 points while Peyton Siva has 4 points for the Cardinals.

The Bulls have controlled the tempo from the tip, keeping things from the transition game that Louisville wants to run. The Bulls are also leading on the glass, taking an 18-14 rebounding advantage at the half.

USF will need to do a better job controlling the ball, already turning the ball over 9 times. Louisville however have been just as careless, turning it over 8 times themselves in the first 20 minutes.

Not a lot of foul trouble on either side, with Gorgui Dieng as the only player with 2 fouls.

The Bulls are in need of a signature win to get help on their NCAA Tournament resume. Can they get a big win in Louisville Wednesday night?

With only two games remaining in the regular season, the South Florida Bulls are looking for another quality win to help their NCAA Tournament chances. While their record has them in fifth place in the Big East they are still lacking a signature win to push them off the bubble and into the NCAA Tournament.

Such an opportunity presents itself Wednesday night at the KFC Yum! Center against the Louisville Cardinals. One of the biggest issues for the Bulls lately has been a lack of scoring, failing to score more than 65 points in each of the last seven games. Despite that, the Bulls have won five of their last six after a 30-point loss to Georgetown on Feb. 4.

Forward Augustus Gilchrist is the only South Florida player that is averaging double figures at 10 points per game exactly. He also averages about five rebounds per game. Forward Victor Rudd Jr. and Guard Jawanza Poland both average 8.7 points per game and will be crucial to the success of the Bulls Wednesday evening.

On the side of Louisville, Kyle Kuric leads the Cardinals with 13.1 points per. Kuric also averages 4.7 rebounds per game. Russ Smith adds 12.2 points per game to the equation and Chris Smith adds 10.2. Another factor that could play well for Louisville is their shooting defense allowing 37.6 percent of shots made. That percentage good for third in the nation for field goal defense.

The tip-off for this game is scheduled for 7 p.m. will be broadcast on BHSN and streaming live on ESPN3.com
