Michael Malone and Brian Shaw are out of the running for the Orlando Magic head coaching job. The Orlando Sentinel reported late Sunday night, citing Malone's agent, that Magic general manager Rob Hennigan informed the Golden State assistant coach that he was out of the mix. Jacque Vaughn, an assistant coach with the Spurs, is the current front runner, says the same report.

Hennigan knows Vaughn who played in San Antonio while he worked in the front office there. Vaughn played for the Magic for one season, in 2002-2003. He joined the Spurs as an assistant coach in 2010.

With Malone and Shaw out, that brings it down to four known candidates for the coaching vacancy. Hennigan will narrow that list further before presenting candidates to team CEO Alex Martin for a second interview. After that, one or two finalists will go before the DeVos family for a final approval.

The Orlando Magic's search for a new head coach continues to move, and according to Sam Amick of SI.com, one name fans won't be hearing as the winner will be Brian Shaw. According to Amick's source is pulling out of consideration for the position.

Shaw played in the NBA for 14 seasons, including winning three NBA titles as a bench player for the Los Angeles Lakers between 2000 and 2002. He has a lengthy coaching resume that includes being an assistant coach for the Lakers from 2004-2011. He spent the 2011-2012 season as a member of the Indiana Pacers as the associate head coach.

Shaw also received permission to talk to the Portland Trail Blazers about their coaching opening. There was no word on Shaw's reasoning to take his name out of the hat for the Orlando job, however.

Orlando Magic general manager Rob Hennigan certainly has a lot on his plate right now. The Dwight Howard trade talks seemed to hit a fever pitch at the start of this week, but they quickly tapered off as the Nets and Magic could not work out a deal -- leading to a max contract for Brook Lopez in Brooklyn. But Hennigan also has a head coaching vacancy he needs to fill, and as many as six candidates have been rumored as the next potential coach.

Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Friday that Spurs assistant Jacque Vaughn's candidacy has gathered momentum, and he may be emerging as a possible frontrunner for the position. Vaughn was a one-time Kansas point guard legend before moving onto the NBA as a reserve. He has not played in the league since 2009, when he moved from the court to the bench in the San Antonio organization. An Hennigan could be targeting the up-and-coming assistant who's paint his dues under the best -- Gregg Popovich:

The main focus for the Orlando Magic right now is probably squarely on a certain somebody named Dwight Howard. However, Magic GM Rob Hennigan is early in the process of finding a new head coach to deal with what will likely be an entirely new looking roster of young players.

Among the potential coaches now is former Suns, 76ers and Jazz player Jeff Hornacek, who was reportedly interviewed for the head coaching job in Orlando, according to the Orlando Sentinel. Hornacek has served as an assistant coach for the Jazz since the 2007-08 season after a 14-year career in the NBA that spanned from 1986 to 2000.

The head coaching seat for the Orlando Magic has remained vacant since the team fired Stan Van Gundy on May 21. Several reports indicated that the team would wait until after the NBA Draft to hire a new coach and with the draft already passed, the Magic has reportedly narrowed the coaching search to four candidates.

Joshua Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel reports that Michael Malone, Brian Shaw, Quin Snyder and Jacque Vaughn are the candidates for the position.

All four candidates acted as assistant coaches during the 2011-12 NBA season and many have strong connections to the Magic. Shaw and Vaughn both played point guard for the team and Malone's father, Brendon Malone, formerly served as an assistant coach for the Magic.

Without anyone currently employed in either the head coach or general manager positions, the Orlando Magic can go in a number of different directions. One of which, according to a report in the Orlando Sentinel, was to hire Phil Jackson in some kind of non-head-coaching capacity. Jackson was interested in the idea for a few days, writes Brian Schmitz, but then he bowed out of the running late on Thursday afternoon.

Scott Schroeder of SB Nation Basketball has a summary of the bizarre story:

It appears, as long as yours truly is correctly comprehending the story, that former NBA assistant coach turned D-League head coach turned NBA head coach turned Lebanon National Team head coach Sam Vincent was brokering the Zen Master to Orlando deal.

Schmitz never really explains how Vincent got involved but quoted him as saying the deal, "drew some interest from Phil, but in the end, Phil decided to go with another opportunity."

Vincent's involvement was much deeper than just being the Jackson spokesperson, however -- he also had a master plan that would have involved Jackson mentoring the Magic's next head coach (which apparently was going to be, in this scenario, a former NBA All-Star without any previous coaching experience).

Former Orlando Magic Head Coach Stan Van Gundy will likely take a year off before considering a return to the sidelines in the NBA, according to reports. Van Gundy's name has recently surfaced in connection with the open Charlotte Bobcats job, but Mitch Lawrence of the New York Daily News reports that he wants to take the 2012-2013 season off:

Even though Charlotte wants to talk to him about its coaching vacancy, Stan Van Gundy is looking to take the year off and then come back to coach in 2013-14. His preference is to work in a warm-weather city for a contender, which is too bad for the Pacers, who probably are less than thrilled about Frank Vogel's failure to make key defensive adjustments when Indy bombed in Games 4-6 vs. Miami.

Van Gundy, and General Manager Otis Smith, were fired last week as Orlando CEO Alex Martins cleaned house after a tumultuous 2012 season.
