FSU loses one of their greatest punt returners in school history.

Greg Reid's dismissal from Florida State this morning is a huge blow. Not just from a talent perspective, as he will surely be missed from the Nation's top ranked defense, but the atmosphere in Doak Campbell Stadium will now be drastically different.

The Senior cornerback is decent for his height (7 career interceptions, 120 tackles, 5' 8"), but he excels as a punt returner. By 2010 and 2011 teams had learned to fear Reid, but every once in a while he'd have his chance. He returned 37 punts for 416 yards last year - fourth most in football, 30 yards shy of the leader. His explosive style was unleashed his freshman year when he returned 21 punts for 387 yards, until they stopped kicking it to him. He was averaging 18.5 per opportunity, humiliating for offenses.

Reid would stand in the end zone for kickoffs as well, but no one wanted to give him the ball, prompting boos from the stands every time - which was somewhat unfair to Lamarcus Joyner, who averaged over 30 yards per kickoff return. Combined, Reid had 563 return yards, which moved him into second place in school history with 89 career returns and 1,117 return yards.

Now: Gone are the days when the stadium would come to life, one hand into the air, fingers spread for Number 5.

Jimbo Fisher and his staff may take heat for his dismissal, but Reid has been subject to discipline many times on and off the field - and who knows how often in the locker room. Reid famously removed his helmet and entered a fight from the sidelines against Florida and had no fear of discipline. Tomahawk Nation wrote after his most recent arrest that there were likely no "courtesy fouls" left for Reid, and that his dismissal could be imminent. Laying down the law was the right choice, and it's unfortunate it had to be a fan favorite.

His unabashed personality was a rally point on special teams, and his tendency to become a "game changer" was a constant threat. He will be missed. Now the Seminoles will move forward, likely slotting sophomore WR Rashad Greene into his pivotal role of punt returner. If Florida State's defense proves to be among the best in football yet again, there will be plenty of punt return opportunities next season.

Florida State University fans woke up Wednesday to rumors that troubled, but talented cornerback Greg Reid had been dismissed. Coach Jimbo Fisher confirmed the news with a morning announcement.

Former Seminoles player and coaching assistant Tamarick Vanover started the speculation over Reid's dismissal with a Wednesday morning tweet.

I HOPE GREG REID CAN LAND ON HIS FEET AFTER BEING KICKED OFF THE TEAM. MY MOMMA ALWAYS SAID THAT A HARD HEAD MAKES A SOFT BEHIND.

— Tamarick Vanover (@VictorNewman87) August 1, 2012

Reid's trouble stems from a July arrest in his home state of Georgia. The state patrol picked him up in Lowndes County for driving on a suspended license and marijuana possession. He was arrested last year for perjury, but the charges were later dropped. He did receive one-game suspension.

Following his arrest, Tomahawk Nation pointed out that Reid was likely to incur some kind of punishment from the Seminoles for his arrest. FSU's drug policy calls for players to be dismissed for three drug incidents.

One of the most electric players in the nation, the senior cornerback dazzled in the return game, running back one touchdown and 563 yards last season. On defense, he recorded 27 tackles and two interceptions.

Reid was named to the preseason All-ACC team as well as a second-team preseason All-American punt returner from CBSSports.com.

Florida State Seminoles cornerback and star return man Greg Reid was arrested on Tuesday evening for driving with a suspended license and also for misdemeanor marijuana possession. FSU head coach Jimbo Fisher issued the standard non-statement statement on the situation.

"I am aware that Greg has been charged and will gather all the information before I determine what course of action to take," Fisher said in a statement.

Obviously there is no word yet if Reid will be punished for the incident, but it's highly unlikely his position on the team is in any kind of jeopardy. There should be more on the issue as the time goes by and more details on the case become public and the school and gather all of the facts.

Florida State cornerback Greg Reid was arrested on Tuesday night for marijuana possession.

Florida State cornerback Greg Reid was arrested in Georgia on Tuesday night for possession of marijuana and driving on a suspended license. WCTV reported news of Reid's arrest on Wednesday morning.

Reid was taken to the Lowndes County Jail following his arrest. He has since been released on bond.

A senior with the Seminoles, Reid was a prized recruit and considered to be one of the top high school players in Georgia before he made the decision to attend Florida State. A starter since 2009, Reid had two interceptions and 32 total tackles for the Seminoles last season.

In addition to his cornerback duties, Reid also returns punts and kicks. In 2011, he returned 37 punts for a total of 416 yards and one touchdown.

Reid was arrested in September 2011 on charges of perjury and resisting arrest. Those charges were later dropped.
