The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Miami Dolphins began their 2012 NFL preseason on Friday night. Tampa Bay won 20-9, but the score is the least important stat and observation to take from a preseason game. Instead, evaluating new players, new styles of play and avoiding injuries are what matters in the preseason. SB Nation's team blogs analyzed last night's game between the Bucs and the Dolphins.

For the Buccaneers, fans had their eyes on their new head coach, and generally, came away impressed.

From Bucsnation:

Overall, though, this was a productive start to the Greg Schiano era. The Bucs walked away with their first win in 11 games, while the team looked more disciplined and composed. The Bucs had a gameplan and stuck to it, and managed to turn a few productive plays into a win and, more importantly, the players and the team as a whole played well.

On the Dolphins' side, quarterback Ryan Tannehill was the team's story of the night. From The Phinsider:

Then, Tannehill took over, playing the second and third periods. And, he did not disappoint. The eighth overall pick of the draft finished the game 14-for-21, for 167 yards, and a touchdown. He looked sharp. He looked poised. He looked good. It was the performance the Dolphins, and their fans, needed to see from Tannehill.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers opened the preseason in Miami with a 20-7 win over the Dolphins. The Bucs built an early lead behind Josh Freeman and LeGarrette Blount and then Dan Orlovsky came on and was impressive in relief. Orlovsky was a perfect eight for eight and led the Bucs on their second touchdown drive which was capped off with a Doug Martin score. The offense throttled down in the second half with Brett Ratliff and the third teamers struggling, but Kai Forbath added two field goals to push the lead to 13.

The story for the Dolphins coming out of their first game action will undoubtedly be the performance of Ryan Tannehill. Joe Philbin gave his rookie plenty of opportunity to sling it and he hit 14 of 21 attempts for 167 yards. Granted, much of it was against the third team but he still passed his first test. Tannehill had his first touchdown pass overturned on review at the end of the first half but he came back in the third quarter to hit Charles Clay for Miami's only touchdown of the night. It was an impressive performance that will have Dolphins fans enthused.

Dolphins rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill had a somewhat shaky start, but he settled in during Miami's final drive before the half. That momentum carried over to the second half, as Tannehill fired his first touchdown of the preseason, connecting with Charles Clay for an 11-yard score. While it's still the third-team defense, it's encouraging to see Tannehill working out of the shotgun and hitting his targets. He played five series and is currently 14 of 21 for 167 yards with his night is likely over as Pat Devlin warmed up on the sidelines.

The Bucs, on the other hand, are now playing with Brett Ratliff under center. Ratliff is a journeyman backup who has had little success in the NFL. He's just five of nine for 41 yards, a steep drop off after backup Dan Orlovsky surprisingly lit it up with a perfect eight for eight night.

The Tampa Bay Bucs entered the locker room on Friday night with a 14-0 lead over the Miami Dolphins. In the first preseason game, the Bucs' offense looked surprisingly sharp, with both Josh Freeman and Dan Orlovsky hitting their targets. After a nice and steady first quarter for Freeman, Orlovsky came on in relief and went a perfect seven for seven for 89 yards. The big play of the Bucs second scoring drive was a 49-yard completion to Tiquan Underwood. Doug Martin also relieved LeGarrette Blount in he backfield and he looked good in his first game action, punching it in the end zone from two yards out.

For the Dolphins, Ryan Tannehill made his debut in the second quarter and struggled a bit at the start. He hit on three of seven attempts but occasionally locked on to his receivers. He hit Roberto Wallace on a short slant route for what looked like the Fins first touchdown of the game, but the score was overturned after review showed Wallace dropping the ball. Tannehill seemed to get some rhythm after the sluggish start and hit two big passes to Charles Clay and Julius Pruitt to get some momentum as the half ended.

The first quarter of the first preseason game is in the books, and Tampa Bay's first team looks to be ending their night. The Bucs starters looked sharp on offense, with Josh Freeman hitting four of five attempts for 41 yards. LeGarrette Blount got the start at running back and he burst into the end zone from one yard out for the game's only touchdown. As one might expect for the first game action of the year, Blount looked fresh and averaged over four yards per carry. Greg Schiano pounded the ball with Blount on four straight plays, with the big back hitting the holes with a purpose. Leading 7-0 after the first quarter, Freeman's night is over and it's likely Blount is done as well.

Matt Moore took the first team reps at quarterback for the Dolphins, and he completed six of nine passes for 58 yards. Moore went to his trusty tight end Anthony Fasano to repeatedly start the game, hitting the Notre Dame product three straight times. Miami's first drive stalled out at the 33, however, and Dan Carpenter missed from 51 yards out.

Those hoping to get their first look at new Miami Dolphins quarterback David Garrard Friday night against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers may be in for a wait, as according to Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun-Times, the quarterback is in need of knee surgery.

This is a big blow to the team, as early indications from training camp were that Garrard was in line to be the Dolphins' starter at the beginning of the year. In his place, expect to see Matt Moore, Ryan Tannehill and Pat Devlin will be seeing more reps in his place.

There is no timetable for Garrards return, but he will be sidelined for the foreseeable future according to Jensen.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are preparing for Friday's preseason game against the Miami Dolphins. This has included a little bit of roster shuffling. After waiving a pair of players, one of which just left training camp, the Bucs signed a pair of players that will be available for Friday's game.

White was signed by the Seattle Seahawks last season, but he never saw the field of play. Rogers was signed out of college by the Denver Broncos last season but also didn't play. Roberson has had two separate stints with the Buccaneers, once in 2010 and the other in 2012. Mitchell signed a deal to play with the Buccaneers back in June, but left training camp soon after.

After trading for the second to last pick in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft, the Buccaneers selected who they believe will be the running back of the future for the team by selecting Doug Martin with the No. 31 pick. But that future will apparently not begin immediately, as the Buccaneers have listed LeGarrette Blount as the starting running back in the team's first depth chart of the year, released Tuesday.

Among those surprised by the news was Sander of SB Nation's Buccaneers site, BucsNation, who said:

"This appears to be running counter to everything we've heard out of training camp, where Martin has consistently taken the majority of the first-team reps and has led the way in most individual drills. Meanwhile, Blount has been inconsistent in passing drills, while Martin has been the clear leader in those exercises. Blount really only shines when there's contact, though, and it looks like he'll get his chance to shine with the first team on Friday during the team's first preseason game."
