Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Mike Mularkey said Saturday that defensive end Austen Lane, who's out with a foot injury, "is a few weeks away" from returning to action.

Jacksonville's depth at defensive end is dwindling quickly, as Aaron Morgan and George Selvie went down in Thursday night's preseason loss against Baltimore. Mularkey said Selvie will miss several weeks with a knee sprain.

Those injuries will give others on the Jaguars' roster a chance to step up, and Mularkey was pleased with the effort of one player in particular.

"Corvey Irvin, without doing any reps outside of defensive end, played a lot of snaps for us in the game," Mularkey said. "Basically he moved out there for us in the fourth quarter. I thought he did an outstanding job [having] not played the position and being effective out there and really not being drained."

Irvin, a third-year player out of Georgia, plays mostly defensive tackle and is better suited for that position, but he'll have to be versatile in the coming weeks. Rookie Andre Branch and 28-year-old Jonathan Mincey are two of the remaining legitimate options at DE for Jacksonville.

Jaguars linebacker Clint Session, who's still on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list with continued concussion struggles, could be out for the 2012 season:

Session, a fourth-round pick of the Indianapolis Colts in 2007, joined Jacksonville prior to the 2011 season and played in nine games (six starts), making 19 total tackles. He's undersized for an NFL linebacker at just 5-10 and 222 pounds, which may contribute to health concerns.

The Jaguars cut down to 75 players Saturday, but Session did not count against the 75 because he's on the PUP list. If the Jaguars do decide to place Session on Injured Reserve, it would clear a roster spot so Jacksonville could add depth.

Laurent Robinson hasn't exactly been productive this preseason, but his coaches seem to be happy with him. This is what Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Mike Mularkey had to say about the wide receiver's preseason when asked about that lack of production:

"A little bit has been coverage. I know guys will say that's the normal answer but some of it has been coverage. Some of it has been the routes have been taken away. Maybe it's been the pressed one-on-one that we have to do a better job with Laurent. I'll say this, the guy comes out to work and tries to work every day just like he did today. We want the numbers to be greater. Not all balls are called to a guy and they go to them. Sometimes they are in a progression and they don't go to him, but he has done some things positively in games that I can tell you. We showed a fifteen play highlight tape this morning of a game that he was part of the run game and blocking which is as important as catching the ball in our offense. I think the production will go up. I know he will like to see it go up. It will help us control the ball more if we can get it in his hands but again, I think we're okay right now."

According to a report on Big Cat Country, Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Matt Veldman will be placed on injured reserve, ending his 2012 NFL campaign before it started. Veldman was injured after entering Thursday night's game against the Baltimore Ravens in the fourth quarter.

The former North Dakota State Bison player caught two passes in the game, but was tackled along the sideline after his second catch and had to be carted off the field. An MRI on Friday revealed that Veldman had torn his MCL, which will require surgery.

Head coach Mike Mularkey is exploring his options on how to fill the void left by Veldman's injury:

Jaguars head coach Mike Mularkey told reporters after practice the team will be looking for a tight end to sign due to the injuries to Veldman and Zach Miller. The team does not plan to play Marcedes Lewis very much in the preseason finale and the only other tight ends on the roster are Colin Cloherty and Zach Potter.

Zach Miller has gotten beaten and bruised all preseason, and it looks like a calf injury sustained in Thursday's 48-17 loss to the Ravens will sideline him for a couple of weeks.

Fans are expecting quite a bit from the big tight end, but Miller's preseason has been riddled with time spent on the sidelines recovering from injuries. He slightly tore his pectoral muscle on August 9, and was injured just three plays after returning from that.

Miller was knocked out of the game against the Ravens in the second quarter and had to be carted off the field. He finished the game with one catch for two yards.

Health has been an issue for Miller as he has played in just 19 games over the past two seasons, missing all but four games last year due to injury. Miller's time as a backup will be filled by both Colin Cloherty and Matt Veldman, who have had solid showings in training camp.

Selvie was injured in the third quarter of Jacksonville's Thursday night loss to the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium. The 25-year old who played his college ball at the University of South Florida, came into training camp expected to start opposite veteran Jeremy Mincey at defensive end. But in two preseason games thus far, Selvie has been a virtual non-factor.
