The Houston Texans took a 9-0 lead over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after one quarter at Raymond James Stadium. Matt Schaub, with Andre Johnson still out with a hamstring injury, was impressive throwing for 138 yards in the first quarter. A large chunk of that yardage was gained on the first play, when Schaub hit Jacoby Jones for an 80 yard touchdown on the first play of the game. Schaub rolled right and hit a wide open Jones who was rolling down the right half of the field with him. Jones would immediately cut back to the left and take it to the house for the opening score. The extra point was blocked by new Tampa starting defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth.
The Texans would add a field goal on a 14 play, 80 yard drive that took nearly 8 minutes of the first quarter. It appeared the drive would stall with an Aqib Talib interception, but the pick was overturned in the end zone when the Texans WR Derrick Mason reached back and knocked the ball loose before Talib could control the interception.
