In another indication that it's only a matter of time before Greg Schiano leaves the Rutgers Scarlet Knights to take over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, his Rutgers squad has called a team meeting for Thursday afternoon, reports Mike Vorkunov of the Newark Star-Ledger. Schiano has led the Scarlet Knights since 2001 but appears to be headed to the NFL.
Schiano owns a 68-67 record as a collegiate head coach, but that modest showing does not adequately represent his success of late. He's had a winning season in six of the last seven years, going 5-1 in bowl games during that span. Most recently, the Scarlet Knights went 9-4 and won the Pinstripe Bowl.
Though known for his Rutgers career, Schiano did serve briefly as an NFL coach. From 1996-98, he worked for the Chicago Bears as a defensive assistant and ultimately a defensive backs coach.
With National Signing Day looming, Schiano's departure is expected to wreak havoc on the Rutgers program, Vorunkov reports.
