Longoria to DL, Felipe Lopez Called Up From Triple-A

Well, that was quick. News just broke that the Rays have indeed placed Evan Longoria on the disabled list due to his strained left oblique muscle, and they have called up Felipe Lopez to take his place.

Signed this off season to a minor league contract, Felipe Lopez is a journeyman middle infielder that derives much of his value from his offense. While he has experience playing all around the infield, Lopez’s defense at most positions is well below average and he will likely serve as a 2B/DH for the Rays. He has a career .322 wOBA, which makes him essentially a league-average bat.

A 40-man roster spot will need to be cleared before the Rays can add Lopez to the 25-man roster, but there are plenty of names the Rays could remove without too much damage. Since the Rays currently have five catchers on their 40-man roster, Jose Lobaton or Nevin Ashley could be removed without much consequence.
