If you weren't paying attention on Saturday, you missed the Rays' wear their yearly throwbacks against the Cardinals. After portraying the St. Petersburg Pelicans and the St. Petersburg Saints over the past couple of years, the Rays decided to go across the bay this season to honor the Tampa Smokers of the old Florida International League.
↵With the one big exception, the Smokers throwbacks were nicely done. Having everyone go high cuff to show off the fantastic stirrups was a great touch. Although there were a few exceptions, they showed everyone the proper way to wear their hosiery.
↵The Rays even went the extra mile to Smokers specific batting helmets for the night. The front office has always made sure to finish the uniform off right, and its always been appreciated when other teams fail to do so.
↵If there is one thing that I have a beef with, its the lack of a cigar in the Smokers wordmark. I understand the Rays' partnership with Tobacco Free Florida, but its a one game thing. The city of Tampa was known as Cigar City, and the cigar is the one thing that makes the Smokers uniform set unique.
↵Altogether the throwbacks were awesome to see and I can't wait to see what the Rays have in store next.
