The Tampa Bay Rays activated catcher Jose Lobaton from the disabled list on Monday. To make room for Lobaton on the roster, the Rays sent Chris Gimenez back down to Triple-A Durham.
Lobaton, 27, had been on the shelf for more than a month with a sore throwing shoulder. He is the primary backup to starting catcher Jose Molina. Prior to landing on the DL, Lobaton had just two hits in 12 plate appearances for the Rays.
Gimenez, 29, hit just .191/.236/.206 during his stint with the Rays in place of Lobaton.
The Rays are not getting much offensive production from their catchers. Starter Jose Molina is hitting just .179/.247/.308 in 33 games this season. Molina was acquired as a free agent this season.
