Rays Vs. Athletics: Tampa Bay Falls To Oakland 4-3 In The 12th Inning

Joel Peralta came out of the bullpen to begin the 12th inning, hoping to provide some relief after six pitchers had already taken the hill on Saturday night for the Tampa Bay Rays. Unfortunately, it didn't go as planned for either Peralta or manager Joe Madden.

Jonny Gomes, who was pinch hitting for left fielder Seth Smith, went deep against the Tampa Bay reliever, homering to left field to give Oakland a 4-3 lead and a victory at Tropicana Field.

Trailing by one run, the Rays then had one final chance to even the score or perhaps even take the lead in the bottom portion of the inning. Leading off, center fielder B.J. Upton singled to shallow left center field. But promptly, first baseman Carlos Pena flied out and right fielder Matt Joyce grounded into a double play, ending the inning and the game.

The rubber match is scheduled for tomorrow at 1:40 p.m. EST. The Rays won 7-2 on Friday.
