James Shields will take the mound on Wednesday against the Royals.
David Price has been the unquestioned ace for the Tampa Bay Rays this year, but as the Rays push for the playoffs, Shields has stepped up his game. The Rays have won five of Shields' last six starts, and the veteran righty turned in a quality start in all five of those wins.
The Royals will counter with Luis Mendoza, who has been something of a pleasant surprise for Kansas City. The undrafted Venezuelan has managed a quality start in three of his last four outings.
Mendoza has never faced the Rays before, but pitching will likely be key in Wednesday's series finale given the 1-0 result of Tuesday's showdown.
The Rays currently trail the Yankees by four games in the AL East, but hold a one game lead over the Orioles for the top wild-card spot.
Wednesday's game will start at 1:10 p.m. ET, and can be found on SUN.
